Devils drain Creek

ST CLAIRSVILLE After scoring 13 points in a strong opening quarter, the Lady Red Devils would net just 15 more in the next two frames to fall behind visiting Indian Creek. St. Clairsville rallied to score 23 fourth-quarter points to earn a 49-46 win on John Jenkins Court Monday night.

The Red Devils would control the tempo in the opener holding the Redskins twin towers of Kiarra Kamarec (6-3) Brianna Berryman (6-5) to one bucket apiece as they rolled out to a 13-4 lead at the first buzzer.

“When you step onto the court you have to be ready from the tip off,” Indian Creek head coach Erin DeSantis said. “We did not take care of the ball on the tip off and it just snow balled from there.”

“The plan was to double Berryman and I thought we did a really nice job of that first quarter, we were on fire and that helps,” St. Clairsville coach Alicia Freeman related that after the buzzer the flame flickered. “The second and third quarters we struggled offensively, we could not put the ball in the net.”

DeSantis had her Lady Redskins back playing their brand of basketball as they went on a 10-0 run to begin the second quarter. Reversing the momentum Indian Creek scored 16 points to just 5 for the Red Devils to take a 20-18 advantage in to the intermission.

The Redskins started the third quarter where they had left off and put the hosts in a 7 point hole and still led by 6 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. St. Clairsville began to scratch their way back in the fourth quarter.

“The team that came out in the fourth quarter was a team that did not want to lose.” Freeman added. “They came out and played defense, they got aggressive.”

The Red Devil press came up with 17 steals as Carlee Gillespie picked off nine passes, four in the fourth quarter to lead the charge. Gillespie also drew three fouls on the floor converting them into four points.

The efforts paid off as the hosts would narrow the gap to a single point 38-37 on the first of her bonus shots. Then once again pulling close to 40-39 netting a pair of foul shots.

Brigee Mick would give the Red Devils back the lead at the 2:32 mark draining a three-point shot in front of the student section to make it 42-40.

Lauren Figura dropped in both buckets on her trip to the charity stripe to move St. Clairsville ahead 44-40.

Alexis St. Clair scored six of her team-high 14 in the final frame, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe – the last pair moving the hosts ahead to 46-42 with just under a minute left.

“It seemed like we were constantly trying to play catch up after that,” Indian Creek’s veteran coach stated. “We had the lead several times, we don’t take care of the ball, we were trying to force things. I don’t know what it is going to take to get over the hump of not playing scared.”

Bethany Davis would cooly drop in two penalty shots at the other end but Anna DeFillippo improved St.Clairsville’s fourth quarter foul shooting effort to an impressive 12 of 14, including Gillespie’s final bucket that set the final score.

The Redskins would get one last chance to tie it up on an inbound with 5.9 ticks remaining. “That was a great look for Bri’ but it was not the game missing that three-point shot,” said DeSantis.

“It was all the little things that led up to that which cost us the game. We should have never been in that position.”

“We need to play four quarters like that,” Freeman said of her Red Devils.

“I am real proud of those girls, they did not quit. They played hard, they were driving to the basket. They read the defense well and took advantage of when the size was outside.”

St. Clairsville committed just eight turnovers. St Clair came down with eight rebounds as the Red Devils totaled 19 caroms.

Berryman netted a game-high 22 points while Kamarec and Davis both added 10 points for Indian Creek as it fell to 5-4.

The Redskins travel to John Marshall on Thursday while St. Clairsville returns to the hardwood next Monday at Union Local.

The Red Devils’ jayvee won 25-19.
