Knights lance Tigers

SHADYSIDE Wheeling Central head coach Penn Kurtz had two reasons to celebrate Thursday evening. The first was getting the first win of the season. The second was that the 62-42 victory came on the hardwood in the Tigers’ Den at Shadyside,

“We don’t get to come away with a win very often here,” Kurtz commented. “This is just our second game and we struggled Tuesday night shooting the ball. We were just 8 of 26 from the foul line against Magnolia and I thought we showed a lot of improvement tonight.”

The Maroon Knights got an early opportunity to prove they had worked on their charity shooting as the Lady Tigers were whistled for seven fouls in the early going and sent Regan Blaha and Lindsey Baker to the line where both netted a perfect 4 of 4. In fact all five starters scored in the first quarter as Wheeling Central took a commanding 21-9 lead and never looked back.

On the other end of the floor Shadyside was struggling making good on 10 of 17 foul shots, 4 of 16 from three-point and just 10 of 42 two-point for a chilly 14 of 58 from the floor.

“Sometimes there are teams with speed and athleticism that take us out of the things we want to do,” said Shadyside head coach Jim Miller. “It puts us in places of weakness where sometimes it is hard to pass out of or we take a quick shot.”

“The kids put that on their shoulders and they say ‘I have to be the one who is going to get this done'” Miller added. “We are improving. It’s just maturation, just growing and learning the game of basketball so that one day they can play like I know they can play.”

Wheeling Central finished the evening with an 18-23 outing from the foul line, Blaha finished with 10 points while Baker matched her point total adding 8 rebounds. Delaney Denniston added 7 points and Maria Olson netted 6 points with 6 assists and 4 steals. McKenzie Michaels chipped in with 6 points and 8 caroms while Sydney Bennington pulled down 8 rebounds with 4 points for the Maroon Knights.

Toni Andes paced Shadyside with 15 points. Kenzie Fielding joined her in double figures with 12 points and 8 rebounds. The LTs turned the sphere over 42 times to just 19 for the Maroon Knights.

Wheeling Central (1-1) will return to the court tonight against Scott while Shadyside (1-5) will host Union Local Saturday.
