River leading at Barnesville
BARNESVILLE – With seven wrestlers into the semifinals, River holds down the top spot after the first night of action at the 20-team Doan Ford Barnesville Wrestling Invitational.
The Pilots piled up 54.5 points for a 11-point advantage over second-place Sandy Valley. Pymatuning Valley and Coshocton are tied for third with 41. Claymont is fifth at 38.5.
A total of 23 local wrestlers are still alive for championship titles.
Advancing to semifinal action, which gets under way at 10 a.m. – weather permitting – for the Pilots were unseeded grapplers Chase Schultheis (120) and Loren Thomas (132), along with No. 2 seeds Kole Smith (170), Dakota Dunn (195) and Brett Rosen (220). Third seeds Jordan Sapp (160) and Brandon Reusser (182) are also through.
Schultheis, Smith and Rosen each moved on with two pins, with Rosen recording the quickest fall of the night in a mere 16 ticks.
Martins Ferry, which sits in seventh place with 32 points, Beallsville, Barnesville, Shadyside and Union Local have three wrestlers alive for titles, while Bellaire has one.
Purple Rider top seeds Bryce Coleman (160) and Jonathon Bodkin (285) each recorded a pair of pins, with Bodkin winning in 1:48 and 0:55. No. 4 seed Thomas Campbell is also alive.
The Blue Devils, who are in 12th with 22 points, were led by senior Bruce Sefert, who is seeded No. 1 at 152, and Preston Bier, the top seed at 195.
Both won by two falls. Third-seeded Jeremy Brown won his only bout by fall.
The Tigers, who are 10th with 27 markers, have No. 1 seed Greg Quinn (113), No. 4 seed Brett Kahl (145) and unseeded Josh Kahl (120). Josh Kahl pulled the shocker of the tournament so far when he ousted No. 1 seeded Rodney Richter of Monroe Central, 9-5, in the second round. Quinn had a pair of falls.
The host Shamrocks are currently in 13th with 20 points and have No. 1 seed Hobie Howiler (145), No. 3 seed Austin Singleton (126) and fifth-seeded Collin Wilson (120) in the semis. Howiler pinned both of his opponents.
The Jets, who are 8th with 30 markers, were led by top-seeded Matt McFarland (170) and third seeds Bobby Stewart (138) and Zac Sowers (145).
The Big Reds’ lone semifinalist is Myliek Green (160), who is seeded No. 2. Bellaire is 19th with 12.5 markers.
