UL boys now 7-0

BEALLSVILLE – Anytime Beallsville tried to make a run during the first half against Union Local on Friday night it seemed like Trenton Tipton answered.

Jets head coach Ben Porter wasn’t surprised.

”He’s a very good player and he showed what he could do,” Porter said. ”Just his all-around game was really solid.”

Tipton poured in a game-high 25 points, including six 3-pointers, as Union Local rolled past homestanding Beallsville, 80-49, in high school boys’ basketball action to move to 7-0.

”I thought he played very well,” Porter said. ”He shot the ball well. The last couple of games he’s been doing what he’s capable of doing. He’s capable of scoring, but he’s someone, as well, that’s willing to make that extra pass. I think the fans saw that (Friday).”

The Jets, playing there second straight game without point guard Kaleb McDiffitt, also got got 18 points from McDiffitt’s replacement at the point – Gavin Porter. Big man Colton McKivitz finished with 16.

”What I liked was we got a lot of guys involved in the scoring,” Coach Porter stressed. ”Again, we made the extra pass to find the open man. Team basketball wins games. That’s the bottom line.”

There was plenty of that from the Jets in the early going as they built a quick 9-0 lead, forcing first-year Blue Devils head coach Jordan Stephens to call time with 4:26 left in the period.

”This was the first game we’d played man the whole game,” he said. ”We’re usually a zone team.

”We thought we’d start off in zone for a few possessions and were down 9-0 and we decided to switch it up and go man and I thought we did OK at times.”

A Dalton Secrest layup made the score 9-5. Then, Tipton hit a pair of free throws to spark a 7-0 Jets run that stretched UL’s lead to 16-5.

Again, the Blue Devils made another surge. This time, it was 7-0, capped by a Logan Nippert trifecta that made the score 16-12. But, again, Tipton responded, this time with a 3 of his own that made the score 19-12. He finished with eight points in the quarter and Union Local went into halftime with a 39-23 advantage.

Tipton scored six of Union Local’s first nine points of the second half as the Jets built a 48-32 lead with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter.

”I thought in the first half, we were in a bit of a fog,” Coach Porter said. ”But, in the second half, I thought we were pretty crisp. I think our overall intensity was just better.”

The Jets led by as many as 34 in the fourth quarter.

Secrest paced the Blue Devils with 13 points, while Nippert finished with 12 and Chad Louden had 10.

”It’s hard to talk about anything good coming out of a 31-point loss,” Stephens said, ”but there were times when we did OK.

”We haven’t won a game yet, we’re 0-7. But we’re headed in the right direction.”

No jayvee game was contested.
