Prep Hoops Roundup: St. C. girls roll by Edison; Harrison cruises past MF

St. Clairsville continued its hot play with a convincing 56-26 victory against invading Edison Monday evening in girls’ high school basketball action on John Jenkins Court.

The Lady Devils blew open a game that was 11-9 after one with a 15-6 second quarter and a 19-8 third quarter.

The now 10-4 Lady Devils were led by sophomore guard Anna DeFilippo’s 19 points, six rebounds and four steals. Junior Alexis St. Clair had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Carlee Gillespie added 15 points, seven boards and six steals.

St. Clairsville visits Indian Creek on Wednesday and Bellaire on Thursday.

Harrison Central 57, Martins Ferry 32

At Cadiz, the Huskies posted their ninth win in 13 outings by virtue of a convincing victory against the visiting Purple Riders inside the John W. Stephenson Center.

Harrison Central knocked down seven 3-point goals en route to the win.

Katie Ellzy had 14 points to lead the Huskies. Shianne Nameth and Kara Dunfee had nine points each.

Martins Ferry (3-9) was led by Morgan Stalder and Tyrah King. Each had 12 points.

Union Local 72, Bellaire 52

At Morristown, Cori Medley ripped the nets inside ‘The Hangar’ for a career-high 32 points as the Jets (10-4) soared past the visiting Big Reds (5-9). The senior meshed 14 field goals, including a pair of treys, and two free throws for her total.

Amanda Swallie chipped in 13 points for the winners, who led 40-26 at the half.

Kierstyn Kidder paced Bellaire with 18 points, two more than teammate Nina Crook. Kidder drained four triples, while Crook had a pair.

Union Local travels to Connorville Thursday night to meet Buckeye Local.

Buckeye Trail 43, Monroe Central 42

At Old Washington, the Warriors (5-7) led by 10 after three quarters but had to hold off a late charge by the visiting Seminoles (5-5).

Catie Smith led the winners with 13 points. Katie Larrick added 11.

Allison Kuhn had a team-high 13 points for Monroe Central, while Carly Baker rallied the Seminoles with nine of her 12 in the final frame.

Buckeye Trail meshed 17 of 20 free throws, including 11 of 12 in the final eight minutes. Monroe Central was a mere 6 of 9.

The Seminoles host Barnesville Wednesday night.


East Richland Christian 82, Massillon Christian 37

MASSILLON – Joel Mott scored 29 pooints, with eight assists and eight rebounds Monday night as East Richland Christian topped Massillon Christian, 82-37, in boys’ high school basketball action.

Trevor Hamm added 18 points and 18 boards for the Lions. Grant Brunner scored 15 points and Jeremiah Mott had 11 points.

Daniel Ries paced Massillon with 17 points.
