Prep Roundup: Buckeye tops Bellaire in baseball; River softball rolls
BELLAIRE – Buckeye Local took advantage of six Bellaire errors and avenged a Monday loss against the Big Reds on Wednesday afternoon at the Bellaire Junior Sports Complex.
Chase Hopkins doubled and singled for the Panthers (7-8), while also striking out three on the mound. Eric Williams added two singles.
Tyler Ramsay doubled, singled and plated a run for the Big Reds (9-4), while Wyatt Back and Hunter Westlake both singled and had an RBI. Brendon Ross added two singles.
Edison 7, Harrison Central 4
CADIZ – Edison exploded for five runs in the last three innings to rallly past Harrison Central at Mazeroski Memorial Park.
Giovanni Rocchi paced the Huskies with three singles. Dustin Redish added a single and RBI.
Linsly 10, River 0
WHEELING – Penn State signee Logan Goodnight hurled a one-hitter, striking out four and walking one as Linsly blanked River in five innings.
Goodnight aided his own cause with a double, single and RBi, while Colton Coss added two singles. Jameson Murray tacked on single and two RBI.
Union Local 5, Indian Creek 5
(game suspended in 12th inn.)
MINGO – Union Local and Indian Creek battled to a 5-5 tie before darkness forced the game to suspended in the 12th inning.
Logan Smith had two singles and two RBI for the Jets, while Shane Smolenak slapped two singles. Dalton Toto added two singles and an RBI.
Barnesville 8, Bridgeport 6
AT BROOKSIDE, Barnesville struck five times in the second inning and added insurance runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh to complete the sweep of Bridgeport.
David Brown hit a home run to fuel the Shamrocks. Bret Crum and Jacob Keiser had two singles and a double, respectively.
Bridgeport was led by Bailey McGrath and Chance Watson. Both had two singles.
Bellaire 11, Barnesville 5, 9 inn.
SOMERTON – There’s something in the air when Barnesville and Bellaire meet in high school softball action.
For the second time this spring, the Big Reds have rallied past the Shamrocks for a victory.
Wednesday afternoon, Bellaire (11-3) scored six times in the top of the ninth to defeat the hosts, 11-5.
Freshman Marissa Dipple clubbed a one-out bases-clearing double to spark the six-run uprising. Red-hot Mary Garloch belted three singles and drove in as many runs.
Mackenzie Conroy plated two runs with a pair of singles and a triple. Daphne Clark ledoff the game with a home run and also singled, while Dallas Messenger,
Morgan Runyan and Kelsey Jarvis each singled twice, with Jarvis collecting an RBI.
Shaylynn Giesey had a run-producing double for the Shamrocks (4-7). Emily Sleeth and Hannah Hannahs had RBI singles.
Sarah McAninch picked up the win in relief of Clark. She struck out four and walked one. They teamed on a six-hitter.
Bellaire, which leads the OVAC 3A standings, is idle until traveling to New Manchester Saturday to meet Oak Glen. Barnesville hosts Shadyside today.
Bridgeport 11, Beallsville 1
At Wolfhurst, Caitlyn Kroll belted a homer, a single and knocked in four runs to lead the Bridgeport past Beallsville.
Miranda Bowers added a double, single and two RBI for the Bulldogs (11-4), while Alexis Wilson slapped two soubles and a single.
Bridgeport visits Bishop Donahue today.
River 11, Monroe Central 1
At Woodsfield, the Pilots (18-2) continued their outstanding season with a run-rule of the homestanding Seminoles in five innings.
Senior Gabby Goudy went the distance inside the circle, striking out seven and scattering five hits. She also issued five free passes.
Rosie Romick paced the 12-hit parade with four singles that drove in three runs. Emelie Heater had a single, double and run batted in, while Monica Curtis and Mackenzie Marshall split four singles and two RBI.
The Pilots host Buckeye Trail Friday. Monroe Central entertains Caldwell.
Buckeye Local 6, Weir 5, 8 inn.
At Connorville, the Panthers (10-3) trailed the entire game until rallying to tie it in the bottom of the seventh with two runs.
Karlee Leonard’s walk-off double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth drove in the winning run. She finished with a pair of two-baggers and two ribbies. Kierstyn czuchran singled and doubled to drive in two runs, while Becky Zeroski singled twice. Ivy Starcher had a run-producing single and Katie Banal doubled.
Buckeye Local visits Martins Ferry Friday.
Indian Local 7, Union Local 4
At Wintersville, Paige Geanangel homered and struck out six to move to 10-1 on the season as Indian Creek bested Union Local.
Alli Delaney homered for the Jets, while Maddie Schafer singled and plated a run.
