PREP ROUNDUP: St. John Central, Harrison sweep softball twinbills

ELM GROVE – Hannah Absalom fired 25 strikeouts and tossed a pair of two-hitters as St. John swept a pair of softball games from Fort Frye, 1-0 and 2-1, saturday afternoon at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Youth Sports Complex.

Absalom aided her own cause in Game 1 for the Irish (13-1), scoring the game’s lone run on a homer.

Amber LaMotte delivered the game-winning single in the seventh inning of Game 2. Taylor Lowe slapped two singles, while Caitlin Sliva added a double and the team’s other RBI.

Harrison Central 6, Weir 5

Harrison Central 12, Weir 0

WEIRTON – Katie Ellzy blasted three homers, a single and drove in seven runs on the day as Harrison Central swept Weir.

Ellzy had two dingers in Game 1, a contest in which the Huskies scored two runs in the seventh and then held off a Red Riders rally in the bottom of the frame.

Harrison Central won the second game in three innings.

Monroe Central 2, Wheeling Central 1

WOODSFIELD – Kristen Baker singled home two runs in the seventh to lift the Seminoles over the Maroon Knights in the first of two games.

Monroe Central got all four of its hits in the seventh to rally.

The Seminoles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, only to watch Wheeling Central plate five in the secen and third frames, before putting the game away with a nine spot in the fifth.

Cambridge 9, St. Clairsville 7

CAMBRIDGE – Cambridge scored four runs in the seventh inning to power past St. Clairsville.

Bre Tetrick belted four hits and knocked in a run to pace the Bobcats. Hallie Stocker laced three hits and two RBI.

Michaela Miller slapped three hits for the Red Devils, while Mackenzie Otto and Summer Galentine each had two. Kipra Rhodes had a hit and two RBI.


Regular Season

Buckeye Local 8, Union Local 4

CONNORVILLE – Josh Figurksi slapped two doubles and knocked in two runs as Buckeye Local powered past Union Local.

Derek Sebring added two RBI and two hits, including a double, for the Panthers (8-9), who play host to Martins Ferry on Monday. Brandon Panepucci singled three times, Eric Williams singled twice, Eric Banal tripled and Chase Hopkins belted a first-inning homer.

Matt Dunfee singled twice and plated a run for the Jets (4-11). Tristan Bruce tripled and Griffey Girty singled and plated a run.
