River softball wins PVC

SARDIS – River is exiting the Pioneer Valley Conference after this school year.

The Pilots (19-2) went out with a bang in their final softball season as they completed a perfect 12-0 run through the PVC with a 9-3 triumph over visiting Buckeye Trail Friday afternoon.

“This is the first time that we’ve won the PVC title,” veteran head coach Dave Wright said. “It’s exciting. These girls have worked very hard. I’m proud of them and they are very deserving.”

Mackenzie Marshall singled three times and drove in a trio of runs for River, which banged out 15 hits. Emelie Heater singled twice to knock in a run. Rosie Romick singled and doubled. Monica Curtis and Landyn Ramsey evenly divided four one-base hits.

Curtis struck out seven and scattered seven hits in earning the win.

While the Pilots have been rolling along – their only losses have both come to Magnolia – Wright knows there are some huge games looming.

“We’ve got a couple of huge obstacles ahead of us,” he admitted. “Our (D-IV) sectional might be the toughest in the state and the OVAC (2A) won’t be easy, either.”

River treks to Pine Grove Monday to play Valley. The OVAC playoffs begin Tuesday.
