Lafferty tops OVBL

LAFFERTY – Lafferty scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to slip past the visiting Wheeling Cardinals, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Steele and Cook Insurance Ohio Valley Baseball League action on the Community Park diamond.

The win allows the Dodgers (5-0) to take over sole possession of first place as Weirton knocked off Maynard (4-1) by a 3-1 count yesterday on Edwin J. Bowman Field in the Steel City. Lafferty and Maynard meet Tuesday night at Firemen’s Field in maynard in a re-match of last year’s championship series won by Maynard.

Tied at two in the fifth, Jordan Barbina drew a one-out walk and got to third by passed balls. Alex Stephens walked to make it first and third with two outs. Stephens stole second and the catcher’s throw into centerfield allowed to race home with the eventual game-winning run.

Matt Masarick pitched the first five innings for Lafferty to earn the win. Mark Smyth got the save.

Tyler McGary doubled for the Dodgers. Stephens singled and had a RBI.

In other action Sunday, Marshall County kept Belmont County winless, 7-3; the Wheeling Yankees picked up their first victory 4-3 over Jefferson County; and the Wheeling Toppers defeated Hannibal, 7-5.

Tonight, Shadyside and Belmont County will play at Fleming Field in Tiger Town, but the Cubs will be the home team.
