OVBL playoffs resume tonight in Weirton
Half of the Steele and Cook Insurance Ohio Valley Baseball League championship series is set.
Maynard, the defending champion, punched its ticket Thursday night when it eliminated the top-seeded Wheeling Cardinals in Game 2 of their best-of-3 semifinal series, 8-3, on the Firemen’s Field diamond at the Community Park.
The other half could be determined later today when No. 2 seed Lafferty (18-6) takes on third-seeded Weirton (18-7) on Edwin J. Bowman Field in the Steel City. The Red Dons lead that best-of-3 series 1-0 after a 6-4 triumph Wednesday in western Belmont County. Should Lafferty prevail today, Game 3 would be played Monday in Lafferty at 6 p.m.
However, the Dodgers have been in this position before, including last year’s semifinals to the same team and this year’s quarterfinals when they had to rally past stubborn Marshall County.
Fourth-seeded Maynard (19-8), which won last year’s tournament as the No. 5 seed, had its back to the wall in the quarterfinals with Jefferson County before winning a 14-inning Marathon last Sunday on B.A. Holloway’s three-run walk-off home run.
Maynard then had its way with the Cardinals, winning 3-2 in Game 1 on the Patterson Field diamond in Elm Grove before completing the sweep Thursday.
Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, Michael Androsko ignited a six-run outburst with a solo homer to deep left-center that cleared County Road 10 on the fly. He later added an RBI single in the frame. Mark Cisar had a RBI on a bases-loaded walk and Ryan Jarvie drove in another.
Winning pitcher Greyson Loweecy tossed the first five innings for Maynard before giving way to Cisar in the sixth.
The championship series, which is a best-of-5 format, will begin Wednesday in either Lafferty or Weirton.
Maynard defeated Lafferty in three games last summer for its title.
- The home team still has only won five times in 14 playoff games.
- Lafferty owns several OVBL titles under Joe “Friday” Bizzarri.
- The championship series will continue Friday; Sunday, July 13; and Monday, July 14 and Tuesday, July 15, if needed.
