St. C. Legion wins Cambridge Tournament

CAMBRIDGE – To say the St. Clairsville American Legion baseball team, Post 159, had a productive weekend at the Don Coss Tournament would be quite the understatement.

Post 159 finished the event with a perfect 6-0 record and brought home the championship trophy, prevailing by a convincing 13-0 score in the championship game Sunday evening against Findlay.

To reach the final, St. C. downed host Cambridge, 6-4.

Against Findlay, Lucas Lloyd – a Martins Ferry standout – picked up the complete game victory, throwing a 3-hitter. A knuckleballer, Lloyd didn’t strike out a batter, but had only one walk and St. C. didn’t commit an error behind him.

Plus, the eight runs that St. C. tallied in the top of the first didn’t hurt his cause either.

Dillon Curtin – a Linsly student – had three singles and a RBI. Eric Banal and Michael “Zuke” Jacob had two singles and two RBI each. Nathan Steele and Daulton Freeman had a single and two RBI.

In the semifinals, Jacob was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game. He fanned six and didn’t walk a batter.

Curtin again supplied a bulk of the offense with three singles, a double and three RBI. Tyler Ramsay – a senior-to-be at Bellaire – had two singles and a like number of RBI. Bailey McGrath – the Bridgeport High standout – had two singles and a triple.

To get to the championship portion of Sunday’s action, Post 159 prevailed twice on Saturday. It toppled Findlay, 8-7 and Massillon 8-1.

In the Findlay game, Bridgeport’s Parker Dyson was the mound winner. He worked five innings and fanned three before giving way to McGrath for the save.

Ramsay had a two-run home run, single and four total RBI. Steele had a single, double and two RBI.

Malik Gummer – a St. C. senior-to-be – had two singles and a RBI. Curtin, Eric Banal and Cody Goletz each had two singles.

Against Massillon, Dylan Hamilton threw a complete game for the pitching decision.

Bellaire’s Hunter Westlake had two singles and a like number of RBI. McGrath, Ramsay and Lewis Mitchell all had two singles and a RBI. Jacob had two singles.

St. Clairsville is now 21-7-1 on the season and will trek to Glen Dale on Tuesday to meet Moundsville Post 3.
