Prep Roundup: Barnesville knocks off Toronto in baseball

BARNESVILLE — Freshman Jared Kernen blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday night sending Barnesville past top-ranked Toronto, 5-4, in a baseball matchup featuring two teams headed to the OVAC Tournament.

Nathan Clark had two hits, including a a double, and an RBI for the Shamrocks (14-5), who will host Linsly at 7 Saturday night in a Class 3A semifinal.

Nick Sinclair laced two singles for the Red Knights (16-2), who will welcome Shadyside at 1 Saturday afternoon for a Class 2A semifinal.

Buckeye Local 6, Bridgeport 5

AT CONNORVILLE, Buckeye Local, after sustaining back-to-back defeats to one-loss foes Toronto and Edison, rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh to down Bridgeport.

Jared Moore tallied the winning run, scoring on a wild pitch.

Andrew Hillman belted two doubles and plated a run for Buckeye Local (6-9), while John Marelli had two singles and an RBI.

Jeremy McKivigan and John Michael Simmons both knocked in two runs for the Bulldogs (3-11).

Buckeye Local welcomes Union Local today, while Bridgeport visits Barnesville on Monday.

Harrison 10, Indian Creek 1

AT CADIZ, Logan Tonkovich doubled, singled and drove in three runs as Harrison Central clobbered Indian Creek.

Andrew Clelland added a double and two RBI for the Huskies (10-7), while Ronnie Bowers singled and plated two runs.

Harrison Central visits Linsly today.


St. Clairsville 4, Meadowbrook 1

AT BYESVILLE, the Red Devils (8-5) bounced back from a 9-inning loss to Edison on Tuesday with a huge road win over the Colts.

Bree Bennington slapped four singles and drove in a run to lead St. Clairsville, which is chasing Harrison Central for the fourth — and final — OVAC Class 4A playoff spot.

Winning pitcher Amaya Smith had a single and double that produced two runs. Ari Reager also knocked in a run.

Smith fanned five, walked three and allowed five hits.

The Red Devils host Monroe Central today.

Harrison Central 5, Brooke 0

AT WELLSBURG, the Huskies (12-5) won their fifth straight with a blanking of the homestanding Bruins.

Hannah Warrington drove in three runs with two singles and a double. Shaniel Nameth added a single and double that plated two runs. Joclyn Peshak singled twice.

Alexia Dowdle allowed seven harmless singles. She fanned five and didn’t walk a batter.

Harrison Central visits Indian Creek today.

Magnolia 5, River 2, 9 inn.

AT SARDIS, the visiting Blue Eagles scored three times in the top of the ninth in outlasting the host Pilots (15-5).

Bailey Caldwell had three singles and an RBI. Lexi Piatt singled twice, while Emilee Heater doubled and Riley Lollathin tripled.

River travels to Tyler Consolidated today.

Buckeye Local 4, Bridgeport 3

AT CONNORVILLE, Destiny Christian raced home from third on an error in the bottom of sixth inning with what turned out to be the winning run against Bridgeport (10-9).

Christian singled, then stole second and third before scoring.

Aliare Destifanes tripled for the Panthers (7-7), while Lillie Windsheimer singled and plated a run.

Buckeye Local plays host to Union Local today, while Bridgeport is off until Tuesday when it hosts the Panthers in a rematch.
