Cross country district event set

CAMBRIDGE — The course to the National Trail Raceway and the OHSAA State Cross Country Championship is lined and ready. But, there’s a lot of work ahead as area harriers prepare for the postseason.

The Eastern District Cross Country meet — slated for Saturday at Cambridge High School — is the first step toward a berth in the state meet, which is slated for Nov. 4 in Hebron.

Before any reservations can be made for the state meet, several miles needs to be ran first. Action begins Saturday at 11 a.m. and runs every 45 minutes with the final race slated to hear the sounding of the gun at 1:15 p.m.

The Division III girls will get the day started and the small-school boys race will follow. Division II girls begin at 12:30 p.m. and the boys round out the day’s action. This is the first time in several years where all of the Division II schools will compete together. Previously, the district had been divided into two races.

Because of changes made by the OHSAA prior to the 2016 season, the number of qualifiers to the regional meet, which will be held next weekend at Pickerington North High School, has been adjusted.

In Division III girls, only two teams and any individual in the top eight of a non-advancing team will advance. In the Division III boys’ race, three teams and any individual not on a team in the overall top 12 will survive to run an additional week.

In Division II, seven girls teams and anyone in the top 28 will qualify. The boys’ Division II field will send six teams and any individual inside the top 24 to the second level of competition.

The divisional breakdown is as follows:
