Prep Roundup: Toronto routs Buckeye in opener; Shadyside falls
TORONTO — Toronto made a statement in its opener.
The Toronto boys’ basketball team got off to a fast start and never looked back, en route to a 71-29 victory over Buckeye Local in both team’s season opener Friday night inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.
The Red Knights (1-0) led from wire to wire.
Two players scored in double digits to lead the way for Toronto. Trillion West tallied a team-high 17 points, while Nick Sninchak collected 15 points.
Drake Novak netted a game-high 19 points to lead the way for the Panthers (0-1).
Toronto outrebounded Buckeye Local, 44-24. Trent Wright pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead the way for the Red Knights. Max Moffo finished with six rebounds to lead the way for the Panthers.
Toronto committed 20 turnovers in the game, while Buckeye Local committed 18.
Toronto raced out to an early 9-2 lead forcing Buckeye Local to call timeout. The Red Knights extended their advantage to 24-6 at the end of the first quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Red Knights outscored the Panthers, 24-9, to build a 48-15 advantage at halftime.
Shenandoah 46, Shadyside 38
AT SARAHSVILLE, Shadyside’s rally fell short in the second half as it dropped a 46-38 reversal to Shenandoah Friday.
The Tigers were led by senior Josh Zandron, who scored 23 points. Sophomore Kelly Hendershot added 13.
