Area trio earns all-Ohio acclaim

COLUMBUS — The honors continued to trickle in for area basketball players Monday afternoon.

The Ohio Prep Sportswriters’ Association unveiled its all-Ohio teams in Divisions III and IV with three area players earning a spot on the top three teams. In addition, numerous players were recognized on the Special and Honorable Mention listings.

In Division III, just one area player was honored.

Union Local senior Haley Porter, who had a brilliant career for the Jets, was named to the third team. Finishing her career with 1,495 points, Porter had a big senior season. She averaged just under 20 points a game. She was her team’s unquestioned floor leader. She was an adept rebounder, passer and lock-down defender, too.

In Division IV, River and St. John Central placed a player on the top three teams.

River junior Lauren Flannery, who was the Eastern District’s Co-Player of the Year, was named second-team all-Ohio after a season in which she led the Lady Pilots to an OVAC Class 2A title.

Flannery averaged some 21 points a game this winter. She was the team’s leader in assists and steals, while handling the point-guard duties for Coach Rick Isaly’s squad.

St. John Central junior Kaylin Nixon had a big season for the Lady Irish, averaging just under 20 points a night. She also grabbed 11.9 a game. Nixon, who had a season high of 34 points, produced double-figure scoring in every game of the season.

Divisions I and II will be released today and the coveted Ms. Basketball will be announced on Wednesday, setting the stage for the OHSAA’s Girls Basketball State Tournament to open on Thursday.
