Area athletes take part in D-III track regional

MASSILLON — Once again, the Division III regional at Perry High School proved to be quite challenging for area competitors.

Nary an area competitor earned an automatic berth in next week’s OHSAA State Track and Field Championship and only two athletes advanced to Friday’s finals.

Shadyside senior pole vaulter Dale Hawthorne finished fifth in his specialty despite soaring over a personal-best 14-feet. Though he didn’t officially qualify, it appears Hawthorne will earn a spot by virtue of the new at-large additions to the field events this season. His mark is better than any of the non-auto qualifiers in the regional.

Shadyside junior hurdler Jakob Klug advanced in the highs thanks to a solid 15.68. He owns the third-best time entering Friday’s meet.

River’s Cooper Brown cruised to the 400 meter dash final and owns the top time at 50.59.
