Prep Roundup: Martins Ferry, St. C. advance to softball district

MARTINS FERRY — Abby Bumbico belted a pair of homers and drove in five runs Wednesday as Martins Ferry drubbed Ridgewood 8-1 to claim an Ohio Division III sectional softball championship at Martins Ferry High School.

The Purple Riders will face Newcomerstown on Monday in a district semifinal.

Maria Clark also went yard for Martins Ferry, while Sidne Sidon had a hit and an RBI.

Bumbico went the distance in the circle, striking out six and walking none.

Meadowbrook 11, Barnesville 0

BYESVILLE — Sidney Rhinehart homered, singled and drove in five runs as Meadowbrook ended Barnesville’s season with a five-inning triumph.

Lunsey Dudley added two singles and two RBI for the Colts.

Alyssa Marlatt tossed a one-hitter for Meadowbrook, striking out 12. She allowed an Erin Hannahs single.

Barnesville finished 15-13.

Edison 5, Bellaire 3

ST. JOE — Kylee Babel belted a three-run homer in the seventh inning to propel Edison to a sectional championship against Bellaire.

The Wildcats scored all of their runs in the final two innings.

Kat Davis doubled and singled for the Big Reds (13-12), finishing the season with a school-record 45 hits.

Mia Gavarkavich singled and drove in two runs for Bellaire, while Tenley Hughes had two singles.

Newcomerstown 18, Harrison Central 14

CADIZ — Harrison Central exploded for 11 third inning runs, but Newcomerstown rallied with 13 in the final three, including seven in the seventh to escape with a victory and a sectional title.

Joclyn Peshek belted a grand slam, double and single for the Huskies (14-10) and knocked in five runs. Britton Positano added two singles and two RBI, while Kobey Johnson had two singles and two RBI and Lexi Ferguson tripled, singled and plated three runs.

Division II

St. Clairsville 4, Dover 3

DOVER — Taylor Gallentine laced two singles and knocked in two runs as St. Clairsville rallied past Dover with two runs in the seventh inning.

The Red Devils will face Steubenville in a district semifinal Monday.

Jenna Jaskowiak earned the victory in the circle, striking out four and walking none.

Division IV

Strasburg 3, River 1

STRASBURG — Zoey Thomas tossed a three-hitter and Brynn Coles had a double, two singles and an RBI as top-seeded Strasburg defeated No. 8 River for a Division IV sectional championship at Franklin Park.

Thomas (14-3) struck out seven.

Emalee Naves and Hannah Maxheimer each added two singles for Strasburg, and Maxheimer added an RBI.

BASEBALL

Regular Season

Barnesville 3, Shenandoah 2

SARAHSVILLE — Uryan Meade slapped two singles and knocked in a run as Barnesville stopped a four-game slide with a victory against Shenandoah.

Jagger Jefferis doubled, singled and knocked in a run for the Shamrocks (18-4), while Riley Tubaugh doubled and singled.

Edison 14, Bellaire 4

NEFFS — George Ash belted four doubles and knocked in a run helping Edison down Bellaire at John Blacker Field.

Chase Nolan had two hits for the Big Reds (6-14).
