OV Seniors champions crowned at Moundsville
The Ohio Valley Seniors Golf Association held its annual tournament last Monday at the Moundsville Country Club.
The tournament, which attracted a large field of players from all over the Ohio Valley, was won by Belmont Hills Country Club member Larry Landtiser, who fired a 3-under 69.
The winning team in the event was the Moundsville Country Club squad, which was comprised of Chuck Dimmick (70), Terry Smith, Jr. (71), Bob Cain (73) and Corky Gehrig (75).
Winning the closest to the pin contest was Jim Salter (AA), Jake Olsavsky (A), Bob Bethel (B), Gary Madrid (C) and Gary Hill (D).
Winning the respective flight titles were:
AAA Seniors: Gross: Don Denoon, 88; Net: John Criss, 66.
AA Seniors: Gross: Bill Croskey, 81; Net: Msg. Ken Uram, 68.
A Seniors: Gross: Chuck Dimmick, 70; Net: Mel Clark, 66.
B Seniors: Gross: Terry Smith, Sr., 71; Net: Denis Minor, 65.
C Seniors: Gross: Larry Landtiser, 69; Net: John Hanasky, 63.
D Seniors: Gross: Larry Blake, 73; Net: Bob Cain, 63.
SANDS ELECTRIC SCRAMBLE
One of the golfing traditions of the Ohio Valley returns to the course on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Belmont Hills Country Club.
The 28th annual Sands Electric Company Golf Classic will hit the course with 26 players in the field.
The team of Bill Mumley and John Pokas are once again in the field trying to defend the title they won last summer. The remaining 12 teams will be randomly drawn the morning of the tournament.
The Sands Tournament began in 1985 as the Warood Reds Open and then shifted to the Barton Braves Scramble. Sands took over as the chief sponsor in 1993.
Bill Glitch is the tournament director.
The annual St. Joseph Tiltonsville Holy Name Society 4-man golf scramble was held late last month at Fairway River Links in Rayland.
The winning team was comprised of Jim Prati, Justin Prati, Nathan Prati and Steve Norman.
The second-place team was made up of Chuck Hughes, Rob Zitzelsberger, R.J. Zitzelsberger and Kevin Orban.
Winning the closest to the pin were Mark Valenti, Nathan Prati and Kenny Hancock.
SENECAVILLE SENIOR LEAGUE
Tom Hartley posted the closest to the pin in the Robbins Ridge Golf Golf League this past week. Bud McCutcheon was the closest to the pin in the second shot.
The low gross honors went to the duos of Hartley and Stevens along with Clapper and Magers. The low net went to Gander and Wickham as well as Schultice and Modock as each posted a score of 32.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Country Pride Restaurant event was held on Aug. 22. George Melnik won the medal championship with a round of 33. Orie Robinson was second with a 35. Gary Mercer finished third. He, too, posted a round of 35.
Tony Campbell was the low player in handicap with a 31. He was a shot better than Bob Hicks. Jeff Miller was third with a 33.
The Bob Fehr Memorial Scotch Bestball Scramble was held on Aug. 26.
The team of Bob Green and Jim Ennis posted a combined score of 62 for the victory. They were two shots better than Orie Robinson and David Coram. Glenn Starkey and Freddie Fitzsimmons also shot a 64 for the third-place finish.
In the handicap portion, Jack Kuntz and Chris Bommer shot a 55, which was three shots clear of Mike DeSantis and Josh Foose. Paul Alig, Sr. and Paul Alig, Jr. posted a 59 to finish third in the handicap.
The Timbergrove Construction 2-man scramble was held on Aug. 29. The duo of Ennis and Green prevailed after a scorecard playoff against Toepfer and Moore. Both teams posted rounds of 31. Robinson and Evans were third with a round of 32.
In the handicap division, Hicks and Kosky prevailed by two shots over Grover and Slonaker, 27-29.
- The Sistersville Country Club 2-man golf scramble will be held on Saturday with a shotgun start planned for 1:30 p.m. The entry fee is $100 per player, which includes golf, cart, skins contest and closes to the pin.
The format for the event is 9-hole best ball and there will be three flights, which will be determined by the first nine holes. Cash prizes will be distributed to the winning teams.

- A scramble to benefit the Shadyside High School Softball team will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills. The event will feature a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
