Park duo takes part in U.S. Open qualifier

The 113th United States Open will be played from June 10-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Local qualifying tournaments got under way this past week.

One of those events was held at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville, W.Va. Two Wheeling Park players – Cole Hand and Thadd Obecny – took part in the tournament.

Hand fired a 1-under round of 70 to get into a playoff for the final spot in the regional qualifier. However, he finished fifth from the group.

Obecny, who has committed to play for Central Florida in the fall of 2014, shot a 2-over 73.


Wheeling Jesuit University’s women’s golf team will be represented in the NCAA division II national tourney next week in Daytona Beach.

Kelsey Frazier earned the right to compete after winning the Super Regional title with a three-day score of 229. She had a low round of 75 in the final round of the tournament, which was held in Illinois.

She had back-to-back rounds of 77 to open the tournament and made a steady climb up the leaderboard.

Oglebay Park played host to the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional this past week. Indiana University of Pennsylvania overcame a five-shot deficit to take the regional title and earn a trip to next week’s national tournament in Hershey, Pa.

IUP shot a 891 over the course of three days, which was five shots lower than Wilmington. California, Pa. will also be headed to Hershey by virtue of its third-place finish with 902.


The Glass Unlimited bestball event was held last Sunday. The duo of Art Lightner and Gary Mercer teamed for a round of 63 and the title. Orie Robinson and David Coram finished second with a round of 70.

In the handicap portion of the event, the team of Jim Ennis and Bob Green prevailed against Bob Fitzsimmons and Freddie Fitzsimmons with a score of 61. Actually, the entire top five had a score of 61.

The Ohio Valley Awards event was held on May 1. Coram edged out Bruce Grover for the medal title with a round of 25. Duane Lescalet led a large group of players with 38s to finish third.

Mike Crow won the handicap championship with a round of 32. Ron Heatherly was second with a 33.


The Bellaire Sons of Italy is hosting its 14th annual golf scramble to benefit Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities on Monday, June 10. The event will be held at the Crispin Golf Course at Oglebay Park with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $200 for a four-man team. Cost includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner at the Haller Shelter following the round. The top three teams will receive prize money.

The Shadyside Boosters are sponsoring a 4-man golf scramble planned for Saturday, May 18 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course beginning at 8:30am. Registration for the 4-man team scramble is $200 per team. Teams can register at Eddie’s Barbershop in Shadyside. Cash prizes will be awarded and plenty of food and beverages will be available. The ninth annual Flushing Masonic Lodge Scholarship Scramble will be held on May 18 at Cadiz Country Club at 12:30 p.m.. The entry fee is $240 a team that covers golf, cart, prizes, lunch at the turn, beverages and a steak dinner following the round. The Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Benefit golf scramble, sponsored by the Glencoe American Legion Post 632, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $200 per team. The price includes golf, cart, beverages, lunch and a steak fry after the round. The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its annual golf outing on June 29 at the Fairway River Links. More information will be forthcoming.

Bridgeport Boys Basketball will be holding a golf scramble on Saturday, May 25th at Paradise Hills, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost of the scramble is $150 per team ($50 per person which includes money for skins). Three man teams will be utilized for the scramble. There will be 50/50 raffle, skins game, closet to the pin, and longest drive. Cash prize will be paid out to the top two teams.
