Pelegreen, WVS playing for WVIAC softball title
West Virginia State has advanced to today's championship game of the West Virginia Conference Softball Tournament
The Yellow Jackets will meet top-seeded Fairmont State for the title at Jackson Park Field in Vienna, W.Va.
West Virginia State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first and led 5-1 heading into the fourth. The Yellow Jackets produced seven runs in the fourth en route to a 15-5 victory over the Falcons in semifinal action.
In the quarterfinals, former Harrison Central standout Sara Pelegreen tossed a 3-hitter as the Yellow Jackets blanked Shepherd, 8-0.
Pelegreen fanned six and walked just one in going the distance. It was her sixth complete game of the season. She improved to 10-1 with a save.
For her efforts during the week ending April 30, she was nominated for WVIAC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Davis Back in Amarillo
After a couple of weeks off, Nate Davis will be back under center tonight when Amarillo hosts Abilene in Lone Star Football League action inside the Amarillo Civic Center.
After leading the Venom to the inaugural LSFL championship last season, Davis started the first two games this spring. His numbers were pretty impressive - 42 of 72 for 359 yards and nine touchdowns. He was only picked off twice.
So impressive were his stats that the San Antonio Talons of the Arena Football League summoned his services when their top two quarterbacks were injured.
However, as Davis joined the Talons for a game in Tampa Bay in early-April, he didn't see any action after being told he would be the starter. Three days after Davis signed with San Antonio, the team also signed veteran QB Nick Hill, who started against the Storm and played the entire game.
That didn't sit well with him, so he returned to Amarillo where he was welcomed with wide-open arms.
"I really enjoy these guys," Davis told an Amarillo reporter. "Me and (head coach) Julian (Reese) like to say we're family out here."
Since his return, Davis, according to sources, has taken more of a leadership role.
"He's been more of a vocal leader now in a very positive way," Reese said. "I'm pretty sure he's happy to be back here."
Davis said he plans to remain with the Venom for the remainder of the season, but he would also like to sign with a Canadian League team, as well.
Herrlein Gets a Top 10
Bethesda native Daniel Herrlein is moving up in the Monster Energy Supercross standings.
On April 7, Herrlein recorded his first career top 10 on the pro circuit when he placed ninth at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Tx., during the 13th round of the Eastern Regional 250SX Class.
The race was 15 laps with 20 racers competing.
He was involved in a brutal crash during the Atlanta stop at the Georgia Dome, but didn't sustain any serious injuries.
Harrison Central and Shadyside will be seeking OVAC baseball championships at Steubenville's Vaccaro Field today.
The top-seeded Huskies will square off with No. 2 Steubenville in the Class 4A title tilt, which serves as the opener of the tripleheader at 11 a.m. At 1:30 p.m., No. 2 Edison and No. 4 Cambridge meet for the 5A title. The 2A matchup between the third-seeded Tigers and No. 4 Steubenville Catholic winds up the day at approximately 4 p.m.
Sectional Drawings Set
Drawings will be held Sunday for the Division II, III and IV baseball and softball Eastern District sectional tournaments.
In D-III softball action at the St. Clairsville Junior Sports Complex, if anyone can figure out a favorite, let me know.
Right now I'd have to say Harrison Central should be considered the frontrunner for the trip to Pickerington and regional action.
But there are at least four, maybe five, other teams that can win the championship. They include, in no particular order, Steubenville Catholic, Bellaire, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville and Union Local. Don't count out Shenandoah, either.
In D-IV at Shadyside, St. John Central is the class of the field, with either Shadyside or River picking up the other district berth to New Philadelphia.
