OFF THE TEE: Beallsville’s Dietrich to golf at Mt. Union

As golf grows in popularity, more and more Ohio Valley prep players are advancing their games to the collegiate level.

Beallsville High School senior John Dietrich has announced his intentions to continue both his golf and academic careers at Division III Mt. Union in the fall.

For Dietrich, the ability to compete collegiately and pursuing a degree in engineering made the Purple Raiders’ program the perfect fit.

“Mt. Union has a long-standing tradition of success in athletics,” Dietrich said. “When I met Coach MacDuffie, I knew that (Mt. Union) was where I wanted to come. I like his philosophy on successful and how he manages the program.”

Dietrich was a three-year mainstay for the Blue Devils, leading the team in scoring the last three seasons. He had an average of 39.

“I don’t believe that I have a true strength in any aspects of my game, but if I had to say one thing, it would probably be (my length) off the tee,” Dietrich said.

Dietrich was a district tournament qualifier last season. He was also named to the all-OVAC, all-OVGL and all Times Leader teams. In an 18-hole match, Dietrich posted a personal low score of 72.

As he prepares to play at the next level, Dietrich admits he must improve his consistency and points to his short game as an additional area that must continue to get better.

“I feel like my wedge game and my putting hasn’t improved much over the past couple of years, and I know if I can improve those spots, then I can compete at the collegiate level,” Dietrich said.

Dietrich will spend much of the summer on the links working to get better. He’s on the driving range three or four times a week. He also plans on playing in several local tournaments.

Along with golf, John is a captain of the baseball team, a Kiwanis Scholar and a honor roll student.

John is the son of Dave and Cathy Dietrich.


The Miklas Meat Market event was held last Thursday. Roger Kupfer claimed the victory with a round of 32. David Coram was second with a 34 and Ron Helms was third with a 35.

Mike DeSantis was the champion of the handicap scoring with a round of 33. Rich Colley fired a round of 35 to finish second.


The Moundsville Country Club Ladies Golf Association is once again hosting the Tournament of Roses for Ladies of all clubs in the Ohio Valley. It will be held on Wednesday, June 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and registration.

A snack will be supplied on the turn and lunch and awards will conclude the day. Prizes will be given in gross and net, with novelty prizes on several holes and a trip for 2 to Hawaii for a Hole-in-One on #18. Registration is $55 and Rose Durant, Tournament Director, can be called at 740-676-6350 for registrations forms and any questions. All ladies are invited to play.


Beginning Thursday, May 8, the Cadiz Country Club will be having a 3-person scramble every Thursday throughout the summer. The public is welcome to participate along with our members play begins at 5 p.m. cost is $15 per team plus cart fees for nine holes. A SCRAMBLE to benefit the Powhatan American Legion Auxiliary will be held in the “memory of Marvin Brown” on July 26 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course on Armstrong Mills. The event will begin wit a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes carts, food and refreshments. Teams are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry due to limited entries.

  • The Sardis Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor its third annual golf scramble on Saturday, May 10 at Fairway Riverside Golf Course in Sardis. The four-player, better ball scramble will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be awarded. Door prizes, raffles and other events will also be held.   • The Castle Shannon Golf Course 2-man “Spring Warm Up” will be held on Saturday, May 10 with tee times starting at 8 a.m. The field is limited to the first 60 teams and the cost is $140 per team. The format is 9 hole scramble, 9 hole best ball and 9-hole alternate shot. There is no senior division, but players 60 and over will play from the white tees. All other competitors will play the blue tees. Prizes are awarded for each nine holes and then overall as well. The deadline for entries is Thursday, May 8.   • The Shadyside Boosters will hold their annual “Tee Up for Tigers” four-man golf scramble on Saturday, May 17 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $200 per team. There will be cash prizes for the top three teams and lunch and beverages will be provided. There will also be door prizes and raffles. To enter a team, sign up at Eddie’s Barbershop in Shadyside.
  • THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge will hold its annual scholarship golf scramble on May 17 at the Cadiz Country Club.

The tournament, which is open to the first 22 paid teams, costs $60 a man or $240 per team. There is an optional skins game for $5 per man or $20 per team.

The cost of the tournament includes steak dinner, awards, door prizes, beverages on the course, cart and golf.

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration is slated for 11:30 a.m. and a hot dog lunch will be served at that time.

All proceeds from the event will go toward two $500 scholarships to benefit Union Local and Harrison Central High School students.

  • THE THIRD annual Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held on May 19 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event benefits the Thomas R. Dowler Fund that supports students, faculty, program and facilities for Belmont College.

The event will begin at noon with a shotgun start. Lunch and registration will begin at 11 a.m. Following the round, dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per player.   • THE 15th annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 will hold its annual golf scramble to benefit Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities on Monday, June 9 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.

The scramble costs $200 per team and includes green fees, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner after the round. The tournament, which will award prizes to the top three placing teams, is limited to 36 teams.

The prizes will for winning is $400, the second place team will receive $200 and the third place team receives $100.
