Sardis VFD Scramble winners listed

The third annual Sardis Volunteer Fire Department Golf Scramble was held last week at Fairway Riverview Golf Course in Sardis.

No fewer than 10 teams took part in the event.

The foursome of Gary Fonner, Tom Jafate, Bob Narrish and Bob Green were the champions of the event.

The second-place team consisted of Travis Rinard, Scott Bowers, Jim Beaver and Chris Poe. The third-place squad included Jeff Brammer, Wes Mosser, Troy Greene and Craig Hesson.

Greene won the grand prize raffle for a Callaway Diablo Octane 9.5R Driver.

According to Kevin Winkler, the President of the Sardis Volunteer Fire Department, the course is already reserved for the 2015 scramble, which will be held on May 9.


The Doris Kinney Memorial event was held on May 11. The medal division was won by Art Lightner and Roger Kupfer, who both posted a round of 32. Orie Robinson and David Coram posted a 63 to finish second. Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer posted a round of 63 and were third.

Ron Heatherly and Bob Hoffman finished with a round of 57 after their 9-strokes were removed because of handicap to give them the win that division. Josh Foose and Mike DeSantis posted a 61 to finish second and Doug Miller and Robbie Evans also finished with a score of 61.


Wheeling Jesuit sophomore Kasey Frazier is going national. Well, she’s competing in the NCAA Division II National Golf Tournament at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.

Frazier is making her second straight trip to the national tournament after finishing in a tie for sixth place overall with a three-day score of 233 at the Super Region 1 Tourament held last week at Purgatory Golf Club.

Frazier posted rounds of 80, 77 and 76 to earn her trip.

“It was a tough (final) day, even with the wind I was able to pull it together and dig out three good birdies, which was key,” Frazier said in a release from Wheeling Jesuit. “Coming off last year, when I won this tournament, I kind of felt guilty about getting in to nationals like this. I’m going to go down there and play my best however.”

WEST LIBERTY’S men’s team saw its season come to a close at the NCAA Regional at Englewood Country Club in Sissonville.

The Hilltoppers finished with a team score of 931, which was good for 17th place overall.

Matt Iceton, who was named MEC Freshman of the Year – was the low scorer for the Hilltoppers with a three-round score of 221.

The other WLU players were Ryan Thomson (229), Tanner Stoffer (238), Kevin Krysty (244) and Aaron Sutton (259).


The first round of the Member-Member Tournament is complete and the brackets for the event are set.

Joe Barki and Brian Komorowski earned the top seed after posting a score of 63. The second seed went to Jeff Cieply and Doug Molnar, which posted a 64.

Three other teams finished with 64s as well. They included Tim Roberts, Jeff Shultz, Joe Marchlenski and Frank Thalman as well as Brad Archer and Andy Carrigan.


The Shadyside Boosters will hold their annual “Tee Up for Tigers” four-man golf scramble on Saturday, May 17 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $200 per team. There will be cash prizes for the top three teams and lunch and beverages will be provided. There will also be door prizes and raffles. To enter a team, sign up at Eddie’s Barbershop in Shadyside.

THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge will hold its annual scholarship golf scramble on May 17 at the Cadiz Country Club.

The tournament, which is open to the first 22 paid teams, costs $60 a man or $240 per team. There is an optional skins game for $5 per man or $20 per team.

The cost of the tournament includes steak dinner, awards, door prizes, beverages on the course, cart and golf.

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration is slated for 11:30 a.m. and a hot dog lunch will be served at that time.

All proceeds from the event will go toward two $500 scholarships to benefit Union Local and Harrison Central High School students.

THE THIRD annual Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held on May 19 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event benefits the Thomas R. Dowler Fund that supports students, faculty, program and facilities for Belmont College.

The event will begin at noon with a shotgun start. Lunch and registration will begin at 11 a.m. Following the round, dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per player. A SCRAMBLE to benefit Easter Seals will be held at Fairway River Links Golf Course on May 17 at 8 a.m. The event is being hosted by the Third Alarm Bar on Wheeling Island. The event has raised $14,000 in first two years and helps to buy therapy tools to be used at the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center. A SCRAMBLE to benefit Jeff Masloski, known as “Tee’D Off at Cancer” will be held at Castle Shannon on Saturday, June 7. The event will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Jeff is a husband, father and caring friend and a well-respected member of the Adena community. He is a member of the Adena Chamber of Commerce. He was recently diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, and family and friends are

THE 16TH annual Niekro Golf Classic will be held on Friday, June 27 at Belmont Hills Country Club. A SCRAMBLE to benefit the Powhatan American Legion Auxiliary will be held in the “memory of Marvin Brown” on July 26 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course on Armstrong Mills. The event will begin wit a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes carts, food and refreshments. Teams are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry due to limited entries.
