West Liberty golf team headed to NCAAs

West Liberty’s athletic program has become known for basketball – and rightfully so – over the course of the last several years.

However, the men’s golf program is heading to the NCAA Division II regional tournament next month in Michigan.

The Hilltoppers earned a bid by virtue of their sixth-place finish in the Atlantic Regional, which will be held in Charleston. Should West Liberty finish in the tournament’s top three, it will advance to the NCAA Division II national tournament later in May in Michigan.

The final Atlantic Regional rankings, which determined the field, were as follows: 1. Indiana (Pa.); 2. California (Pa.); 3. Charleston; 4. West Chester; 5. Millersville; 6. West Liberty; 7. Gannon; 8. Concord; 9. Mercyhurst; 10. Virginia State.


The Bordas & Bordas 3-man mix event was held on April 27 at Wheeling Park.

The trio of Lightner, Kupfer and Crow claimed the championship by eight shot. The trio teamed for a 137 in the 36-hole event event. The second-place team consisted of Carney, Colley and Moore.

Mercer, Bommer and Perring finished third with a 145, while Schwertfeger, Scollick and Traylor were fourth with a 158.

Matt DeSantis, Mike DeSantis and Foose posted a 132 to win the handicap scoring portion of the event. Ennis, Green and Klamut finished second with a 142. Evans, Kosar and Miller were third at 143.


On top of its tournaments, events and challenging course, Belmont Hills is also hosting Demo Days, which are open to the public.

Ping will hold a demo day on Saturday, May 3.

A SCRAMBLE to benefit the Powhatan American Legion Auxiliary will be held in the “memory of Marvin Brown” on July 26 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course on Armstrong Mills. The event will begin wit a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes carts, food and refreshments. Teams are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry due to limited entries.

The third annual Saints Club/Butch Soukup Memorial Golf Scramble will be held at Belmont Hills on Sunday, May 4. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. Tournament director Randy Mellott is expecting a full field of 38 teams to take part in the event, which will have all of its proceeds benefit the St. Clairsville High School Golf Program. After the round of golf, the players will go to the St. Clairsville American Legion Post 159 for an Outback catered dinner. Prior to the round, Starbucks will provide coffee and pastries. There will be several special contests during the round. Baumer Financial Group is sponsoring a $10,000 hole-in-one prize on Hole #2 and Sabo Insurance is sponsoring a $5,000 putting contest.The tournament will also honor the St. C. senior golfers from the 2013 season as honorary captains. The 23rd Annual Soup Kitchen Golf Scramble will be held Friday, May 2 at Crispin Golf Course. Shotgun start at 1:00. The entry fee is $75 and entry information can be called in to Becky at 304-233-2992. Lunch and dinner are included and 18 hole prizes will be awarded along with cash prizes for top three teams. The Soup Kitchen served over 120,000 meals last year and proceeds from the tournament will help with providing this service.

The Sardis Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor its third annual golf scramble on Saturday, May 10 at Fairway Riverside Golf Course in Sardis. The four-player, better ball scramble will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be awarded. Door prizes, raffles and other events will also be held. The Castle Shannon Golf Course 2-man “Spring Warm Up” will be held on Saturday, May 10 with tee times starting at 8 a.m. The field is limited to the first 60 teams and the cost is $140 per team. The format is 9 hole scramble, 9 hole best ball and 9-hole alternate shot. There is no senior division, but players 60 and over will play from the white tees. All other competitors will play the blue tees. Prizes are awarded for each nine holes and then overall as well. The deadline for entries is Thursday, May 8. The Shadyside Boosters will hold their annual “Tee Up for Tigers” four-man golf scramble on Saturday, May 17 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $200 per team. There will be cash prizes for the top three teams and lunch and beverages will be provided. There will also be door prizes and raffles. To enter a team, sign up at Eddie’s Barbershop in Shadyside.

THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge will hold its annual scholarship golf scramble on May 17 at the Cadiz Country Club.

The tournament, which is open to the first 22 paid teams, costs $60 a man or $240 per team. There is an optional skins game for $5 per man or $20 per team.

The cost of the tournament includes steak dinner, awards, door prizes, beverages on the course, cart and golf.

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration is slated for 11:30 a.m. and a hot dog lunch will be served at that time.

All proceeds from the event will go toward two $500 scholarships to benefit Union Local and Harrison Central High School students.

THE THIRD annual Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held on May 19 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event benefits the Thomas R. Dowler Fund that supports students, faculty, program and facilities for Belmont College.

The event will begin at noon with a shotgun start. Lunch and registration will begin at 11 a.m. Following the round, dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. The cost for a team is $500 or $125 per player. THE 15th annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 will hold its annual golf scramble to benefit Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities on Monday, June 9 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.

The scramble costs $200 per team and includes green fees, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner after the round. The tournament, which will award prizes to the top three placing teams, is limited to 36 teams.

The prizes will for winning is $400, the second place team will receive $200 and the third place team receives $100.

The cost is $50 per player or $200 per team and registration is due by July 12. The cost includes cart, green fees, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. The entry fee is $50 per person or $200 per team and the event is limited to 20 teams. Teams are being encouraged to pre-register with a $50 deposit to ensure team entry.
