Off The Tee: Ferry’s Shane claims junior tourney title
Prep golf season is a little more than a month away and area prep players continue to hit ball after ball and play round after round to get ready.
The Eastern Ohio Junior Golf Classic was held at Cadiz Country Club last week.
Martins Ferry’s Joel Shane captured the medalist honor in the 16-18 year old division with a round of 80. He was a shot better than Buckeye Trail’s Jed Burga.
Union Local’s Jarret Causby was fourth with an 87, while the Harrison Central duo of Bryce Walrath (92) and Austin Kowalski (97) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. The Huskies’ Evan Ossman rounded out the top 10.
Matt Hawthorne, who plays at Harrison Central, sank the long putt and Ossman was the long drive winner.
Meadowbrook’s Tanner Hewison was the champion of the 13-15 year old division. Harrison Central’s Devin Webster was the long drive winner.
The Oglebay Women’s Golf Association held its second annual tournament last week with 88 players from the tri-state area taking part.
Some $2,000 in prize money was awarded to the top three places in low gross and low net. Special awards were also presented for special skill prizes.
Bernie Cherenko, Vicki Yoho, Rhonda Noble and Jodi Sandvik were the winners of the low gross titles.
The annual Kalkreuth Roofing Amateur Golf Tournament was once again a successful event. For the third straight year, the tournament made a donation to the Easter Seals. This year’s donation was $2,600 as a full field of golfers took part in the event earlier this month.
The plans for the 2015 tournament are already underway.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
A pair of events were held last Sunday.
The ‘Scotch Twosome’ event – sponsored by Country Pride Restaurant – was held with the duo of Art Lightner and Mike Brickner winning the medal division with a round of 31. Orie Robinson and David Coram finished second with a round of 33. Also posting a 33 was the team of Nick Klamut and Bob McLaughlin.
In the handicap scoring, Mike Crow and Bruce Beck prevailed with a 29. That was two shots better than John Bryan and Lloyd Carmichael. Jim Ennis and Bob Green finished third with a 32.
The Joe and Pat Kuskey Memorial event was also contested as a 2-man bestball. The aforementioned duo of Robinson and Coram finished with a 30 to win, while Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer posted a 31 to finish second. Lightner and Brickner were third.
The handicap scoring was captured by Russ Travis and Dennis Porter with a score of 28. Ennis and Green finished with a 29.
The Ohio Valley Golf Association heats up again this weekend with the 16th annual Bob Finegan Memorial Tournament. It opens Saturday and wraps up on Sunday with more than $3,000 in awards and prizes to be presented.
There will be prizes for the top individual medal and senior finishers as well as super senior. There will be best ball and senior best ball.
The entry fee is $90 per player, but Wheeling Park pass holders can enter for $50. The cost includes golf, lunch each day and cart.

OFF THE TEE INFORMATION
If you know of golf happenings or local folks shining in the golf industry or field, feel free to let us know. We’re looking for anything local golf related to run in this space. Whether it’s scramble or tournament results, we want it. Don’t hesitate to send information of hole in ones, double eagles, etc. You can skip the bogeys, however.
The second annual Oil and Gas Outing will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club on Monday, June 30.
The event is held to “show appreciation and awareness to the oil and gas industry.”
The event will begin with a 10 a.m. shotgun start and registration gets under way at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $675 a team, which includes golf, lunch, dinner, beverages on the course, prizes, special events and an open bar at the completion of play.
The event will benefit the Harmony House Children’s Advocacy Center, which works to strengthen the community’s response to child abuse.
The golf portion of the event will also feature skins, mulligans and raffles. Sponsorships are also available for the event.

The Wheeling Jesuit wrestling program enjoyed a solid first season of competition this past winter. The Cardinals’ program is continuing to grow and is looking to add on to its existing wrestling room.
The Circus Saints & Sinners Club will hold its 14th annual Charity Golf Scramble on Friday, June 27 at Wheeling Country Club with the proceeds of the event going to WJU’s wrestling program.
The scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee for the event is $100 and tee sponsorships are also available for $100. Lunch and dinner will be included as well as beverages on the course.

The Union Local girls’ basketball team will be sponsoring a scramble on July 12 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course. The shotgum start is set for 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded on all Par-3 holes. THE ANNUAL Buckeye Local Touchdown Club Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, July 12 at Paradise Hills Golf Course.
The event is a 3-person scramble and the cost is $150 per team with all proceeds benefitting the Buckeye Local Football program. The cost is $50 per player or $200 per team and registration is due by July 12. The cost includes cart, green fees, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. There will be an optional skins game for $5.
