OFF THE TEE: Obecny cruises in first OVGA event
The Ohio Valley Golf Association’s season got underway last weekend with the 36-hole Play It Again Sports Amateur at Wheeling Park Golf Course.
Thadd Obecny II, who is headed to Central Florida in the fall to continue his golf career, captured the tournament championship with a score of 128. Obecny, who has been a regular on the tour’s junior ranks, was seven shots clear of runner-up Bryan Myers, who has won the last several OVGA Player of the Year Championships.
Obecny opened up a 9-shot lead on Myers after the opening day. He fired a round of 63. He followed that up with a 65 on Sunday to clinch the title.
Bob Potts and Eric Coe finished tied for third in the medal division with a 136. Paul Joanou rounded out the top five with a 140.
Mike Spitak shot a two-day score of 138 to win the junior event. He won on a tiebreaker against Kyle Wensel. Freddie Fitzsimmons was third in the juniors with a 144.
In the senior division, Mike Wilson was two shots better than Paul Kurtz for the title. Bill Glitch finished third with a 143 and Mike Brickner was fourth at 146.
Roger Kupfer was a run-away winner in the Super Senior division. He shot a 132, which was eight shots better than Ron Helms. Larry Landtiser was thid at 141 and John Becca was fourth at 142.
The OVGA season resumes on June 14 with the eighth annual Kalkreuth Roofing Amaeur Golf Classic at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Center.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Al Blatnik Memorial event, which is is a Scotch Twosome event, was held on May 28 at Wheeling Park.
The team of Chris Bommer and Gary Mercer were the run-away winnings. The duo posted a 32, which was seven shots clear of their nearest competitors. Mike Crow and Bruce Beck finished with a 39.
Tony Campbell and Tom Mitchell were third with a round of 40. Jim Ennis and Bob Green posted a 41 and Ted Koski and Bob Hicks shot 42 to round out the top five.
In the handicap scoring, Art Lightner and Ron Helms earned the victory with a score of 32. Other rounds of 32 were posted by Rich Colley and Paul Carney; Mart Hartline and Bernie Schultz and Rick Diefenbaugh and Dick Moore.
ROBBINS RIDGE SENIOR LEAGUE
The league continued at the Senecaville Course on May 27. The duo of Spratt and Christman fired the low net round of 32 and the low gross round of 32.
The closest to the pin went to Bill Bickford and the closest to the pin on the second shot went to Ron Carpenter.
SCRAMBLE TO BENEFIT
The Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling Program enjoyed a solid first season of competition this past winter. The Cardinals’ program is continuing to grow and is looking to add on to its existing wrestling room.
The Circus Saints & Sinners Club will hold its 14th annual Charity Golf Scramble on Friday, June 27 at Wheeling Country Club with the proceeds of the event going to WJU’s wrestling program.
The scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee for the event is $100 and tee sponsorships are also available for $100. OIL AND GAS OUTING
The second annual Oil and Gas Outing will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club on Monday, June 30.
The event is held to “show appreciation and awareness to the oil and gas industry.”
The event will begin with a 10 a.m. shotgun start and registration gets under way at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $675 a team, which includes golf, lunch, dinner, beverages on the course, prizes, special events and an open bar at the completion of play.
The event will benefit the Harmony House Children’s Advocacy Center, which works to strengthen the community’s response to child abuse.
The golf portion of the event will also feature skins, mulligans and raffles. Sponsorships are also available for the event.

BELMONT HILLS CC
Club Professional Ron Baker is once again sponsoring junior clinics throughout the summer for aspiring golfers.
The clinic will start on Tuesday and will include nine sessions with the last coming on Tuesday, July 1.
The cost of the clinic is $125 for BHCC members and $150 for non members.
The complete schedule for the clinics is as follows: Tuesday, June 3; Wednesday, June 4; Friday, June 6; Tuesday, June 10; Wednesday, June 11; Tuesday, June 17; Wednesday, June 18; Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, July 1.
All class times will be assigned today and the golf pro shop will contact all of the participants with their scheduled times.
The Moundsville Country Club Ladies Golf Association is once again hosting the Tournament of Roses for Ladies of all clubs in the Ohio Valley. It will be held on Wednesday, June 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and registration.
A snack will be supplied on the turn and lunch and awards will conclude the day. Prizes will be given in gross and net, with novelty prizes on several holes and a trip for 2 to Hawaii for a Hole-in-One on #18.
Registration is $55 and Rose Durant, Tournament Director, can be called at 740-676-6350 for registrations forms and any questions. All ladies are invited to play.

The cost is $50 per player or $200 per team and registration is due by July 12. The cost includes cart, green fees, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. - A SCRAMBLE to benefit Jeff Masloski, known as “Tee’D Off at Cancer” will be held at Castle Shannon on Saturday, June 7.
The event will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Jeff is a husband, father and caring friend and a well-respected member of the Adena community.
He is a member of the Adena Chamber of Commerce. He was recently diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, and family and friends are
rallying behind him to tackle it head on. The cost to enter the scramble is $65 per golfer, 4-man teams.

- THE 15th annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 will hold its annual golf scramble to benefit Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities on Monday, June 9 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.
The scramble costs $200 per team and includes green fees, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner after the round. The tournament, which will award prizes to the top three placing teams, is limited to 36 teams.
The prizes will for winning is $400, the second place team will receive $200 and the third place team receives $100.
