Bellaire TD Club Scramble winners crowned

The eighth annual Bellaire Touchdown Club Scramble was held in late June at Fairway River Links.

The tightly contested event came down to a scorecard playoff, utilizing the 17th handicapped hole. The team of Keith Mozingo, Kevin O’Grady, Mel Hand and Ken Patterson finished with a round of 15 under par to prevail.

Their score was better on the 17th than that of the team of Jim Goodson, Mark Mason, Adam Davis and Nick Shanks.

Finishing third was the team of Lance Mehl, John Buddenburg, Gary Bracone and Jay Salva. That squad posted a round of 14 under.

Winning the skill prizes during the event were Mike McDonald (long drive on No. 3), Jason Bogers (closest to the pin on No. 5), Casey Coyne (closest to the pin on No. 6), Mel Hand (closest to the pin on No. 11) and Adam Ofat and Jeff Thrash (tied for closest to the pin on No. 13).

Tournament officials expressed their appreciation for the sponsors and supporters of the event.

ACE

MIKE VELT, of Heathrow, Fla., aced the 183-yard 13th hole at Oglebay’s Crispin Course on Monday. He used a 4-iron for his feat, which was witnessed by Jeff Hofman.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The annual Salt Fork Junior Golf Tournament drew a full field last Monday.

The medalist honor in the 17-18 year old division went to Jed Burga of Buckeye Trail. He shot a round of 80, which was a stroke better than Luke Engle.

Union Local’s Jarrett Causby finished with a round of 91, which was good enough for a tie for ninth place overall.

WHEELING PARK GOLF LEAGUE

The league got back in action last week, playing a pair of events.

On July 2, the Johnson Boiler event was held. George Melnik prevailed with a round of 33. Terry Younkins also posted a 33. Ron Helms was third with a round of 35. Rich Colley and Doug Miller finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Both fired 36s.

The handicap scoring was captured by Russ Travis, who finished with a 30. Dave Slonaker (32), Jim Ennis (33), Rick Diefenbaugh (33) and Todd Morrison (33) rounded out the top five.

The Beekeepers by Rich Moorehead was held last Sunday, utilizing a 3-man Florida Scramble scoring system.

The trio of Robinson, Coram and Brickner prevailed by three shots with a 57. They were ahead of Lightner, Kupfer and crow. Moore, Colley and Carney were third with a round of 61. Finishing fourth was Willming, Evans and Miller, while Ennis, Green and Klamut were fifth with a 63.

In the handicap scoring, the trio of DeSantis, Foose and Morrison prevailed with a 53.

Geyer, Yuhase and Pinkerton posted a 54 to finish as runnerup.

JUNIOR TOURNEY AT BHCC

The Belmont Hills Country Club Junior Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 28th with divisions available for 17-18, 15-16 and 13-14 years old for the boys. The girls’ divisions are 16-18 and 13-15.

Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each division.

The entry fee is $30 and it includes lunch for all participants and the lunch will be available for purchase for the spectators.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start and the deadline for entry is Monday, July 14.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

The Union Local girls’ basketball team will be sponsoring a scramble on Saturday at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course. The shotgum start is set for 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded on all Par-3 holes. There will be a 50/50 raffle and door prizes. The cost is $60 per person. Mulligan and Skins included. Food and beverages will be provided.

THE ANNUAL Buckeye Local Touchdown Club Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday at Paradise Hills Golf Course.

The event is a 3-person scramble and the cost is $150 per team with all proceeds benefitting the Buckeye Local Football program. THE BELLAIRE American Legion Post #52 will host its fourth annual Tom Donahue Memorial Classic Golf Scramble on Saturday, July 19 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills with a shotgun start planned for 9 a.m..

The cost is $50 per player or $200 per team and registration is due by July 12. The cost includes cart, green fees, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. There will be an optional skins game for $5.

THE MARTINS Ferry American Legion Post #38 will hold a 3-man golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 9 at Paradise Hills Golf Course with a shotgun start slated for 9 a.m. The cost is $50 per player and there’s an optional $5 skins game.
