OFF THE TEE: Final Jeffrey Showalter Classic tees off Aug. 13

The 10th – and final – Jeffrey Showalter Classic golf tournament is set for Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the picturesque Belmont Hills County Club just west of St. Clairsville.

Sponsored by the Ohio Valley Christian Soldiers, the event has raised a ton of money for various groups and organizations around the Ohio Valley.

One key to the tournament, which is held in honor of Jeffrey Showalter who was killed in an accident in 2004, is the wide range of former professional athletes that annually grace the star-studded field.

“We are very grateful to see these highly accomplished athletes take the time to help us raise money for our local Ohio Valley charities,” said OVCS member Dave Diosi. “Although it is bittersweet to see the 10th and final event come to a close, it is a joy and a true blessing to reflect on the relationships formed and money raised over the past decade.

“Thank you to all the celebrities, sponsors, participants and OVCS members and volunteers who have been a part of this journey over the past 10 years.”

Some of those celebrities that have already confirmed to play in the event include former Ohio State running back and two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin; professional kickboxer Bernard “Swiftkick” Robinson and his son Bernard “Swiftkick” Robinson, Jr.; local favorites Bob Bruney and Bob Butts; Bob Cook; Brock Woods (Wheeling Thunderbirds/Nailers); Claudio Reilsono; Devon McDonald (Notre Dame/Indianapolis Colts); Don Donatelli; Doug Donley; Ed Breehl; Frank Marchlewski; Frank Thomas; George Wilson; Gerry Myers; Herman Weaver (Detroit Lions); Ike Kelley; Jamie Caleb; Jeremy Uhlenhake (Ohio State); Jim Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers); Jim Herren; Jim Rooker (Pittsburgh Pirates); John Candelaria (Pittsburgh Pirates); John Stofa (NFL); John Thierry; Kirk Mee; Lance Mehl (Bellaire, Penn State, N.Y.
