Adams captures Ed Carenbauer Senior title at WCC

Second-seeded Jay Adams knocked off top-seeded, and defending champion, John Karras 2 up to capture the 2014 Ed Carenbauer Senior Club Championship at Wheeling Country Club recently.

Along the way, Adams defeated No. 7 seed Doug Molnar, 4 and 3, in the quarterfinals, before topping third-seeded Phil High, 3 and 1 in the semis.

Karras reached the finals by outlasting eighth-seeded Frank Joanou 5 and 4 in the quarters. He then defeated Jeff Cieply 5 and 4.

High defeated Pail Irby 3 and 2 in the quarters, while Cieply knocked off Carl Carenbauer 2 and 1.

In addition to the championship trophy, Adams also received $60 in golf shop credit, along with the coveted champion’s parking space.

Karras received $40 in golf shop credit, with the semifinal losers receiving $30 in golf shop credit and the first-round losers $20 in credit at the golf shop.


The Barnesville Jr. High team, coached by Chase Milburn, dropped its opener last week to West Muskingum at Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hopewell, Oh., 313-358.

Payne Johnson led the Shamrocks with a 44, while Zach Thompson fired a 52. Tyler Wilson checked in at 57 and Carter Wells at 66. Jacob leach had a 69, one shot better than Jude Hannahs.


George Melnik and Mike Perrine topped the field in the recent Paree Insurance event at Wheeling Park Golf Course.

Melnik captured the medal division in a scorecard playoff with Bob Green, Chris Bommer and Ron Helms. All carded 35s. Rich Colley, Gary Mercer and Mike DeSantis all fired 37s.

Perrine won the handicap division, also in a scorecard playoff, with a 32. Also shooting 32 were Dick Moore and Russ Travis.

Jim Druschel finished fourth at 33, while Dave Stauver, Bob Hicks, Terry Younkins and Todd Morrison had 34s.


The inaugural Dominick Nardo Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Belmont Hills Country Club with a shotgun start slated for 9 a.m. The entry fee is $125 per player and that includes golf, lunch, beverages, snacks, dinner and prizes.

OV Seniors Tournament

One of the oldest tournaments in the Ohio Valley will tee it up on Aug. 25 at Wheeling Country Club.

The Ohio Valley Seniors Golf Association, consisting of clubs from Belmont Hills, Cadiz, East Liverpool, Moundsville, Steubenville, Wheeling and Williams Country Club, will hold its event at Wheeling CC.

This will be a medal and handicap event for players over 50. The age groups are 50-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80 and above.

Dan Daily is the defending champion in the event and the overall team victor was the squad from Belmont Hills.
