Field trips leave lasting memories
I’ve been thinking lately about the kinds of field trips I took as a kid. Some of them were quite memorable. One was to the Serpent Mound in Ohio, but I couldn’t remember where it was located.
I looked it up and it is in Peebles, Ohio, nearly four hours away from where we live.
I went to elementary school in Wintersville, so this means the bus drive was even longer.
I guess I didn’t mind the long ride because I don’t remember it, but I do remember the mound. It was really cool and massive.
I seem to remember running on top of it or maybe beside it. I’m not sure if we were allowed to do this, so perhaps I just wished in my little kid brain that I could.
Another neat school trip we took was to Meadowcroft Village. This was another field trip that I enjoyed, but I couldn’t remember where it was located.
I looked it up, too, and it is in Avella, Pa., not too far a ride from here or my old stomping grounds of Wintersville.
My favorite thing at Meadowcroft was seeing how the grist mill worked. We got to grind corn into cornmeal in a little log cabin-type building.
We then took our bags of it home and I remember making cornbread with my mom with it. It was exciting and educational.
I’m wondering if our young son Henry would enjoy this. I think he would be impressed by the buildings there. He thinks log cabins are neat, I think.
Anything hands-on is usually a big hit for kids. It also makes for good memories, too. And I’m always thinking about how to make good memories for our son. Because you’re only a kid once, you know?
Perhaps will take a day trip there one weekend this summer. It would be closer than the serpent mound, though I would like to see it again some day, too.
