AARP offers help when it comes to filling out taxes

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide service will be available beginning Wednesday from a new site at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville.

The free tax preparation and electronic filing service will be located in the former Picture People site next to Macy’s. The Tax-Aide site will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 13. Appointments can be made only by walk in at the site, and the last appointment of the day is 3 p.m.

Taxpayers must bring a photo identification and Social Security cards for self and all dependents, as well as a copy of last year’s income tax return. Taxpayers must also make certain that they have all documents needed to complete their 2016 tax return.

These include W2s from all employers; SSA-1099 if receiving Social Security; all 1099 forms for interest, dividends, pension/annuity/ira distributions, sale of stocks, as well as any 1099-Miscellaneous for rents, royalties or other income; unemployment compensation statement; child care or dependent care provider information (name, employer ID); a summary of medical expenses and deductible items if itemizing; any forms indicating taxes paid; and any other document pertaining to their federal and state taxes.

Taxpayers who would like to have any refund direct deposited must bring a voided check or savings account passbook for account number purposes only. A deposit slip is not acceptable.

Individuals who are the official representative of a taxpayer, living or deceased, for whom they are filing a tax return, must bring a copy of the power of attorney.

The volunteers who provide the Tax Aide service are trained and certified to handle a variety of returns. However, some tax forms are outside the scope of the program. Tax-Aide volunteer counselors can review taxpayer documents to determine if the return is within scope or if the taxpayer should seek professional assistance in preparing a return.

The site volunteers will do only Ohio and West Virginia state returns.

Tax-Aide is a volunteer-run program operated by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service as part of its Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. While the program places special emphasis on low-to moderate-income individuals aged 60 and older, taxpayers do not need to be AARP members or retirees to participate.
