Officer hurt in rollover crash

WHEELING — A Wheeling police officer was injured early Thursday when his cruiser rolled over on River Road.

At 2:35 a.m., the officer was driving from Warwood to Wheeling Island to respond to a call of shots fired that officers ultimately determined was unfounded, according to police department spokesman Philip Stahl.

It was raining, and the officer’s car rolled over, Stahl said, noting that the officer doesn’t remember anything about the crash.

The crash occurred at the intersection of River Road and Northern Parkway. The officer suffered a fractured pelvis, among other injuries, Stahl said.

Stahl said the injured officer was taken to Wheeling Hospital, and then flown to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer for a full and healthy recovery,” Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said in a release. “The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, at the request of the Wheeling Police Department.”

The name of the officer involved in the crash was not released Thursday.
