Shots fired near St. Clairsville Wal-Mart

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — An Arkansas man was booked into the Belmont County Jail after he allegedly fired shots at the Ohio Valley Plaza on Wednesday.

Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas said Derek Young, 25, of Arkansas was arrested in connection with the shooting, which occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Lucas said sheriff’s deputies and officers with the St. Clairsville Police Department responded after someone called 911 to report that shots were being fired at the retail center. Their investigation revealed that Young had allegedly stolen beer from the Wal-Mart store. He then traveled out into the parking lot near the Arby’s restaurant and allegedly fired 12 shots from a 9-mm handgun into the air.

Lucas said no one was injured, and he noted Young was apprehended without further incident and taken to the jail.

Lucas said Young was being booked on multiple charges, including aggravated robbery, since he reportedly had the handgun in his possession when he committed the alleged beer theft. He also was being booked on charges of inducing panic and having a weapon under disability. Lucas said this charge was leveled because Young was under the influence of alcohol while handling the firearm.

Lucas said additional charges are possible in the case.
