Purple City students graduate Sunday

MARTINS FERRY — The Martins Ferry High School Commencement Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Tolbert Gymnasium with doors opening at 1 p.m.

Attending the ceremony will be the MFHS Class of 1967. Dr. Walter Dombroski, member of the Class of 1967, will be the guest speaker. Cade Lloyd is the 2017 valedictorian, and Sophia Koucoumaris is the salutatorian.

Lloyd is the son of Michael and Karen Lloyd of Martins Ferry. He earned a 4.643 grade point average. Very active at MFHS, Lloyd served as president of the National Honor Society as well as president of the Leo Club. He was treasurer of his class all four years and was a member of Chy-Phy, Wilderness Club and Spanish club. Lloyd was a four-year member of the baseball team and lettered each year. He also played football his freshman year. He has been awarded several scholarships including the Ken Dennis Memorial Scholarship, Albert Christ Scholarship, Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival Scholarship, as well as several others. His name appears on the Academic Wall of Fame for having attended the Chamber of Commerce Academic Awards Banquet every year he was eligible. He is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Martins Ferry, where he is an altar server. Lloyd will be attending Walsh University in Canton in the fall. He has been accepted into the Walsh Honors Program and the Early Assurance 3+3 Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program.

Salutatorian Sophia Marguerite Koucoumaris is the daughter of John and Mary Koucoumaris of Colerain, granddaughter of Steve and Marlene Koucoumaris of Colerain and the late Calvin and Dorothy Schnelle of Wheeling. She earned a 4.441 grade point average. At MFHS, Koucoumaris has been involved at MFHS as a member of the National Honor Society and the Chy-Phy science club, Ferrian editor, member of the Spanish club, peer tutor, elementary volunteer, office aid and a member of homecoming and prom committees. She has also participated in track and danceline. Koucoumaris has volunteered at Ohio Valley Medical Center, East Ohio Regional Hospital and Peterson Rehabilitation Center. She has attended the iBELIEVE Leadership Conference and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference. Koucoumaris appeared in the 2016 Gold, Khourey and Turak “Don’t Text and Drive” campaign commercial. Her name appears on the Academic Wall of Fame. She has received the Challenge Programs Awards for perfect attendance and community service, and the Auxiliary Award from OVMC for having the most volunteer hours over the course of four years. She also has received scholarships from the VFW Post 626, Martins Ferry FOP Lodge 78, MFHS Alumni Association, and the Ken Dennis Memorial. Koucoumaris is a member of the Zoodochos Peghe Greek Orthodox Church in Martins Ferry. She will be attending Shawnee State University to pursue a degree as a physical therapy assistant majoring in health sciences and business administration.
