St. C Legion donates banners

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The St. Clairsville post of the American Legion has several projects planned for the summer months. Among these, the legion provides patriotic banners to the city.

“We were asking for donations, and what the Legion couldn’t get, the city was going to make up the difference, but we voted at our meeting. We’ve got about $1,100 in donations, and at our last meeting we voted for the Legion to pay the balance, so all the banners will be paid for by the American Legion,” Legion Post Commander Larry Barnes said. “These banners are for the light poles in the city of St. Clairsville. Every light pole they put flowers on one side. Now we’re going to have banners on the other side. So every light pole will have a banner on it.”

He added that there will be 45 banners and the total cost was $2,350.

“They’ll put it up in the spring, so it’ll be up Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Then in the fall the school puts up banners for the different kids playing sports,” he said, adding that the banners will be taken down during the fall and put up again in spring.

Among summer’s other projects is the paving of the American Legion headquarters parking lot.

“We’re going to pave our parking lot. Get it paved. Get it straight,” Barnes said, adding that paving should be complete Monday.

Also, the Legion membership will hold its usual Memorial Day ceremonies at the Union Cemetery in the area. The Legion’s annual picnic is set for Aug. 19. Other plans include a possible steak fry.
