MARTINS FERRY — Students in the Martins Ferry City School District will see some new administrators when they return to classes after summer break.

During their Monday meeting, board of education members approved the resignation of Robert Dalton, who has served as middle school assistant principal since 2014. Dalton will be taking another position in Zanesville.

Charles Yoder, who had served as assistant principal of the elementary school, will take over for Dalton as middle school assistant principal, while Sean Zeakes, who had been a fifth-grade science teacher, was promoted to elementary assistant principal. Both moves are effective Aug. 1, with salaries to be negotiated.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Superintendent Jim Fogle said. “(Yoder) has already proven himself at the elementary. I’m looking forward to him going over and working with (Principal Mike) Delatore at the middle school. Just a different age and a different setting. He’ll do a fine job there. Sean Zeakes is a young, energetic guy who is going to be a great addition to the elementary.”

In other matters, Treasurer Karen Blake reported the 2014 audit has resulted in a return of $55,000 to the district. The 2015 audit will be scheduled.

The board also approved supplemental appropriations of $4,245 and temporary appropriations of about $10 million for fiscal year 2018. Blake said revenue is dependent on the state budget, which should be finalized by Friday. She said a more complete calculation of the budget should be done by August.

In other business, the board also accepted the resignations of Paul Matuska and Kim Appolloni, varsity assistant girls’ and boys’ basketball coaches, respectively. Lisa Kapiskosky was hired as a reserve cheerleading coach.

Gary Pompeo was hired as a substitute custodian and Bonnie Howard as a substitute cafeteria worker.

Richard Cook was hired as a substitute maintenance worker, custodian and cafeteria worker.

The board approved an agreement for professional services with Kendall Behavioral Solutions LLC for the 2017-18 school year to provide behavior modification plans for special needs students. The services and contract will be the same as with the prior company, but Kendall is based in Martins Ferry.

The board approved tutoring wages for Nikki Baranski for six weeks of extended service for two special needs students.

The board approved the member service agreement and fees and services associated with the Ohio Mid-Eastern Regional Education Service Agency for 2018, as well as renewing the East Central Ohio Education Service Center contract for 2018.

The board also approved a one year contract with Lynn Mamone for preschool services. She will receive beginning teacher wages with health benefits.

The board also voted to withdraw from a shared services feasibility study of school bus maintenance services.

“We’re pretty self-sufficient,” Fogle said. “We have our own in-house mechanic.”

The board also approved the Thin Blue Line Safe Place program, working with the Fraternal Order of Police, for the school year. The program involves area businesses that will place notifications up that they are a safe place for children encountering bullying, kidnapping attempts or dangerous activities. Children will be able to make a phone call for help.

The district approved the use of school property by the Martins Ferry Chamber of Commerce for the annual Fourth of July celebration scheduled for Friday, with a rain date of Saturday.
