‘March for Mutts’ scheduled Friday

MOUNDSVILLE — Area pet owners can enjoy a day of fun and charity with their four-legged friends during an annual Marshall County Animal Rescue League event this month.

The 19th-annual “March for Mutts” event at the Sam Shaw walking trail will begin with a “Spay-ghetti” dinner at Hartley’s Hall at Moundsville’s Riverfront Park from 3-8 p.m. Friday, with tickets available at the door. Miller, Smith and Mazure will provide free music from 6-8 p.m., while tickets for raffle baskets and a 50/50 drawing will be available for purchase.

The march on Saturday will begin with a 9 a.m. registration at the trail. As part of the annual event, dog owners are encouraged to bring their pets for a day of games, prizes and charity.

The group march will begin at 10:30 a.m., led by veterinarian Brandy Morgan and featuring Marshall County Sheriff’s Deparment K-9 Spartan. All donations from both days will go to the Marshall County Animal Rescue League, which benefits the county’s animal shelter and Tiffany Dlesk Spay and Neuter Clinic.

According to Happy Tails Pet Salon owner and March for Mutts organizer Terri Lindsey, the march will include the popular “Fetch a Winner” game, allowing individuals to purchase numbered tennis balls. During a musical break, the balls will be randomly assorted on a lawn and participants will have their four-legged pals fetch them for a chance to win gift cards and other prizes.

“This is probably the rescue league’s biggest fundraiser of the year,” Lindsey said. “It’s a fun event that raises much-needed funds for the shelter’s everyday costs and medical bills at the clinic.”

Lauren Cook, director of the Marshall County Animal Shelter, said the event allows participants to have fun with their own animals while meeting shelter dogs which will be present throughout the march. Pet owners will need to provide up-to-date immunization records for the pets they bring from home at registration.

“The funds provide medical care for the animals — spays and neuters and anything extra that we need,”
