OPALs and OVMC to host Medicare 101 Program for public

WHEELING — The Older People with Active Lifestyles group is hosting an educational program, “Medicare 101,” for the public at Ohio Valley Medical Center from 2-3 p.m. today. You do not need to be a member of OPALs to attend this free program that will be held in Conference Room A adjacent to the cafeteria on the second floor.

This event is designed to advise Medicare beneficiaries, or those who will soon be eligible, of insurance options for things such as Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Part D — Prescription Drug Plan options.

The speaker, John Forsyth of City Wide Insurance, has written Medicare insurance plans since 1990 and has been teaching this Medicare 101 course for nearly 11 years. He is licensed in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. According to Forsyth, “This is an educational event to learn more — not to pick a plan. I am giving facts and information and would never steer someone to a specific policy.”

Mary Velez, OPALs director, said, “OVMC and EORH are sponsors of the OPALs program and are pleased to be providing this educational program to members of our community. Whether you are already receiving Medicare benefits or will do so in the future, this is a great opportunity to find out the best options for you based on your own health conditions and prescription usage.”

The OPALs group, sponsored by OVMC and EORH is celebrating its 28th anniversary this year. They offer educational programs, luncheons, great day and multi-day trips, and free exercise classes. More than 1,300 members receive a quarterly newsletter that keeps them up to date on OPALs and hospital events.

Registration for this free program, Medicare 101, is required as seating is limited. To make your reservation or to get more information on this program, call Velez at 304-234-8643.

East Ohio Regional Hospital, located in Martins Ferry, with 140 beds and Ohio Valley Medical Center, located in Wheeling, with 200 beds were acquired in June by Alecto Healthcare Hospitals. OVMC and EORH house more than 1,500 employees and provide the area’s only comprehensive orthopedic centers of excellence, behavioral, and mental health services and board-certified emergency services on both sides of the Ohio River.
