WHEELING — A spaghetti dinner featuring live music will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Christ United Methodist Church, 1232 National Road.

The jazz duo of Matt Hill and Aaron Carey will play a mix of jazz standards and classical music for guitar, a few Native American flute songs and selected original compositions on guitar by Carey.

The fundraiser coincides with the West Virginia Day of Hope weekend observance in Wheeling.

The spaghetti dinner will benefit three service-oriented programs. All proceeds from the dinner will be shared between the Will Ruberg Service Scholarship Fund at Wheeling Jesuit University, the House of the Carpenter and a new community music program called Community Made Serenade.

The Ruberg Service Scholarship Fund was established at Wheeling Jesuit in 2008 to fund immersion trips for one or more service-oriented students each semester. The scholarship provides service immersion trip funding of up to $150 for domestic trips (not to exceed the cost of the trip) and up to $650 for international service immersion trips.

Scholarship applications become available only after students have signed up for immersion trips. One student per trip is chosen to receive the scholarship.

The House of the Carpenter is a nonprofit organization that serves the greater Wheeling area and is affiliated with the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Its services are provided to all in need regardless of race, gender, orientation, religious affiliation or nationality.

Its services include helping to provide basic needs that people have related to food, clothing and shelter and assisting people in developing skills and understanding that make it easier for them to improve their quality of life.

The Community Made Serenade is a new program funded by Try This West Virginia and hosted by Christ United Methodist Church. Musicians of all ages are welcome to attend the eight annual structured practice sessions that will be led by guest musicians and teachers. The group meetings and selected music will be posted on Facebook before each practice session.

Several businesses provide support for the spaghetti dinner, including Undo’s Restaurant and Catering; Riesbeck’s Food Markets; Ye Olde Alpha Restaurant; and Lou and Jane Costanzo. Christ United Methodist Church members and Wheeling Jesuit University students donate their time to help organize and put on the dinner.
