American Legion to escort spirit of America Wall Friday

CADIZ — A vast group of motorcycle riders and local law enforcement will be escorting the Spirit of the America Wall to the Harrison County Fairgrounds today.

“We are bringing the Freedom Wall in on Friday. … A lot of the legion members, both here locally and from far away, are going to bring their motorcycles and from what I see so far on most of the weather channels, it’s going to be a decent day,” Harrison County Sheriff Ronald J. Myers said.

The riders will line up on the Tappan Lake Dam, on U.S. 250 and Eslick Road at 9:30 a.m., “kickstands up” at 11 a.m., according to the Cadiz American Legion Post 34 flier.

Organizers are expecting between 200 and 300 motorcycles to join the escort of the wall. There also will be around 22 members of local law enforcement participating in the escort. According to Myers, he expects eight officers from the sheriff’s department, eight Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and six post commanders from around the area to bring in the wall and to aid with traffic control.

Myers said they will have the road closed on U.S. 250 and Ohio 9 southbound in Archer Township between 10:30 and noon today. There have been signs posted advising of the temporary closures that will take place today.

Myers said they have gone through many of scenarios in order to make this escort ride as safe as possible for the motorcycles and the wall to arrive at the destination.

“We have dedicated a lot of resources to it, so hopefully … it will go off without a hitch. … We’re going to start the procession going up (U.S.) 250 from the dam. … We’re figuring it’s probably going to take us a half hour, could be less, to come up along the lake. It’s going to be a pretty good sight to see,” he said.

The sizable freedom escort will begin at the Tappan Lake dam and end at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Cadiz. The Freedom Wall will be available to view there all weekend, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
