WHEELING — An elderly man shot and killed himself Wednesday afternoon in an examination room at Wheeling Hospital’s emergency-trauma center.

The man’s name has not been released.

“An 82-year-old man did die from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an exam room inside the emergency room. No other patients were harmed,” a hospital spokesperson said Thursday.

Philip Stahl, public information officer for the Wheeling Police Department, said the man had been transported to the hospital by ambulance from outside the city of Wheeling.

Stahl said that it “appears he had concealed a small handgun on him and then took his own life. No one else was injured.”

According to Wheeling police reports, police received a call at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday regarding a “suicide by firearm.”
