Drug arrest Tuesday nets 12 pounds of cocaine

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Belmont County Sheriff’s Department reported an arrest and a sizable seizure of suspected drugs early Tuesday.

According to a release from Sheriff David Lucas, deputies responded to an apparently routine call of a suspicious person at an area motel.

“Deputies quickly realized that this was anything but routine,” Lucas stated.

According to the report, deputies smelled an “overwhelming” odor of marijuana and, during a search of the suspect’s vehicle, found more than 6 kilograms of suspected cocaine, as well as 2 pounds of marijuana, apparently bagged for sale.

Lucas said this was the largest amount of cocaine ever seized by his department.

“To put this in perspective, the total weight of the cocaine seized would be over 12 pounds,” he said in the release.

Ivelisse Cruz-Alcantara, 23, of Reading, Pennsylvania, was arrested and is being held at the Belmont County Jail on charges of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs. Her bond was set at $100,000.
