‘Captives and Kin’ virtual book talk set Moundsville Library

MOUNDSVILLE — Local author, historian and artist Alan Fitzpatrick will discuss his latest book in a live virtually program for the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30.

“Captives and Kin in the Ohio Country” is Fitzpatrick’s new work delving into American and regional early history. This online event is free and aimed at adults.

In his book talk, Fitzpatrick will share some of his extensive research into the remarkable history of individuals captured, adopted and assimilated by Native peoples on the colonial frontier. It is a compelling and little-known side of a “racial war” in early American history.

The fate of hundreds of captives is found only in tribal oral history. “Captives and Kin” uses fictional voices tightly woven to the historical record to create a fascinating true-to-life narrative.

Fitzpatrick is a founding member of Wheeling’s premier heritage event, Fort Henry Days, that commemorates the “last battle of the American Revolution” in 1782 at Wheeling’s Fort Henry. Born in Saskatchewan, Fitzpatrick lived in Canada until moving to the United States at the age of 15. His previous books include “Wilderness War on the Ohio: The Untold Story of the Savage Battle for British and Indian Control of the Ohio Country During the American Revolution” (2003, 2005), “In Their Own Words: Native-American Voices from the American Revolution” (2009), “Place of the Skull: The Untold Story of Wheeling’s Earliest History” (2014) and “The White Indians” (2016).
