COVID Cases Identified in Marshall County Schools

MOUNDSVILLE — Two cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in two days at separate Marshall County schools, though the cases were said to come from community spread — not from spread among staff or students.

On Wednesday, Marshall County Schools identified one case reported at Center McMechen Elementary School. Thursday, another case was reported at Glen Dale Elementary. The people who tested positive were not identified as staff members or students, but a statement indicated that no students were exposed to them.

Both cases were said to have been acquired elsewhere in the community, rather than picked up at the schools.

Marshall County Schools will continue to operate on a four-day-a-week schedule, with students in class Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Wednesday spent learning remotely while the schools are sanitized.

Countywide, Marshall County reported 34 new cases of the coronavirus Thursday and five probable cases. Two cases have been deemed severe, and one man has been hospitalized. The county reports 479 total cases since the onset of the disease, with 203 patients currently at home in isolation and eight hospitalized.

Ohio County reported 23 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, a result of 219 tests administered across the county. Countywide figures on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources website indicate that the county’s infection rate and percent positivity continue to increase by the day, at 51.75 and 5.21, respectively. The county remains orange on the color-coded COVID map.

The Ohio County Health Department reports a total of 749 cases since the pandemic arrived, including nine deaths.

The color designation was the same in Marshall County, which continued to see those same numbers rise as well, with an infection rate of 58.49 and 6.46 percent positivity. The percent positivity has risen by half a percent each day since Monday.
