Harrison Central to host vaccine clinic May 7

CADIZ — Harrison County residents age 16 and older will have a chance to receive a COVID-19 vaccine next month when the Harrison Hills City School District hosts a vaccination clinic.

During its Thursday evening meeting, the board of education approved the Harrison County Health Department’s request to utilize the high school’s parking lot for the clinic, set for May 7. Superintendent Dana Snider said the health department requested to use the parking lot in conjunction with Change Inc. to administer vaccines to 16- to 18-year-olds along with any member of the community who would like to participate in the clinic.

“This is being ran by the health department and Change Inc. I’m assisting them with the process,” she said. “We’re just providing the space of the parking lot so the students can get the vaccinations if it is parental approved.”

Snider said she will send home notices and permission slips for interested students to have a parent or guardian sign.

The school will host the second dose clinic May 28. Snider said officials will determine an alternate day as well, due to the date coinciding with graduation day.

Snider said she values all the county health department has done for the school and looks forward to hosting the clinic.

“The health department has been very cooperative on everything with the COVID pandemic, and I truly appreciate all they’ve done for the school. Anything I can do as superintendent to assist them, I certainly will do that,” she said.

Snider also announced that the school has received 150 COVID-19 at-home test kits that will be available for staff, students or community members. She said the self-administered tests are easy to use and provide quick results.

Anyone interested in obtaining a home test kit can contact the school nurses.

In other matters, Snider brought up her discussion she had last week with Cadiz Village Council concerning the district’s potential purchase of a 5-acre portion of Mazeroski Field.

“The council is very on board to work with us in purchasing the field. Mrs. (Roxane) Harding is putting out a request for qualification for architects to get a design,” she said.

Snider said they are also working to obtain an appraisal on the field to discover a possible purchase price.

“They (council) certainly want to make something happen for our students and our community, which is a wonderful way to go,” she said.

The school district will approach council with a proposed purchase price once the design work and appraisal are complete.
