Attempted murder suspect arrested

Pa. man is taken into custody in St. C.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — A Washington, Pa., man was arrested in St. Clairsville by the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department on Friday morning on a charge of attempted murder.

Sheriff Dave Lucas said his office got a call around 2:30 a.m. Friday from the Pennsylvania State Police post in Washington saying troopers were looking for Eric William Hanna Jr., who allegedly shot another male inside of a vehicle in Washington on Thursday. Investigators had received information that the suspect might be at the Red Roof Inn in St. Clairsville.

“From the Pennsylvania State Police’s investigation, they obtained information that he was at that location. Our deputies checked and found out he was there,” Lucas said. “Surveillance was set up by our people until the Pennsylvania State Police was able to obtain an arrest warrant.”

A warrant was issued for Hanna’s arrest on a felony charge of a “criminal attempt — criminal homicide” by Judge David W. Mark of Canonsburg, Pa., and received by the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department at 6 a.m.

According to the incident report, officers were faxed a copy of the warrant and responded by getting a room key from the front desk at the Red Roof Inn. Deputies opened the suspect’s room door, immediately apprehended him and took him in to custody without incident. The arrest was recorded with body cameras.

The suspect also was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, firearms not to be carried without a license, propelling a missile into an occupied vehicle, possession of a weapon, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief — damage property.

As of Friday afternoon, Hanna was in the Belmont County Jail awaiting extradition back to Pennsylvania.
