Heavy rain leads to minor flooding in Ohio Valley

JACOBSBURG — A road was closed in Belmont County and police were warning motorists to avoid an intersection in Wheeling late Sunday due to high water.

Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas said Pipe Creek Road was closed due to high water, but he stressed that residents of that area were not in danger. Pipe Creek was one of two streams that suddenly flooded in 1990. A total of 26 people died in that tragedy, which also affected Wegee Creek.

Lucas said he had spoken with county Emergency Management Agency Director Dave Ivan, who told him all creeks were high but running freely. No other flooding had been reported in the county as of 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Meanwhile, traffic was being rerouted around the intersection of U.S. 40 and Bethany Pike in Wheeling, which often experiences flooding during heavy rain.

To the north in Harrison County, officials said two roads were flooded: McFadden Road and Ohio 151 between Bowerston and Scio. No flooding had been reported in Monroe County, although a dispatcher said heavy rain had fallen on the region and more was on the way.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for much of the Ohio Valley, in effect until 1 a.m. Monday.

Up to 2 inches of rain had fallen Sunday with an additional half an inch expected, according to the NWS.Some locations that could experience flooding include Wheeling, Moundsville, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville, Bellaire, Barnesville, Bethlehem, Shadyside, McMechen, Powhatan Point, Glen Dale and Bridgeport.

Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly at night when the dangers of flooding may be more difficult to recognize, according to the NWS.
