Another Harrison County Fair in the books

CADIZ — Festivities associated with the 2018 Harrison County Fair wrapped up on Saturday with officials reporting much better attendance than in previous years.

The fair kicked off on Monday with the crowning of the Junior Fair royalty. Stephanie Birney, 18, was crowned Junior Fair queen. She received her crown from 2017 Queen Abby Kellar.

Dillon Dodds, 18, was crowned Junior Fair king by 2017 King Bailey Eberhart. This year’s Junior Fair princess is 10-year-old Nora Jackson. No prince was crowned this year.

Tuesday held off-road racing and Wednesday featured the demolition derby, but organizers said Thursday night drew the biggest crowd. Thursday held the Ohio State Tractor Pullers Association’s Truck and Tractor Pull. Cadiz resident Catherine Caldwell, who worked the entrance gate to the fair all week, said the fairgrounds were so crowded that there was no place left to park Thursday night.

“We had cars packed in the lots, at the college, on the road and even had to have some start parking down in Sally Buffalo,” Caldwell said.

Regarding how many cars had come through the gates this year, Caldwell said workers had counted well over 5,000 cars. She also said Thursday alone brought in more than $6,000.

Friday held the fair’s first rodeo in a long time as well. Fair volunteer Amy Edwards said that Friday night also had a good turnout, due in part to the presentation by Rafter M Rodeo.

“It was definitely a good turnout this year,” Edwards said of fair attendance in general. “Thursday and Friday turned out to be very big nights for us.”

This year’s fair also had rides provided by Deschler Amusements for the first time. Many fair patrons agreed that the rides from Deschler are much better than those provided last year. One young fair-goer named Tyler said this year’s rides were “so cool” and “a lot of fun.”

Harrison County Fair Board members said they were very grateful to all the fair’s sponsors, and they hope to see everyone again at next year’s fair.
