Village mulls ponding water issues

BELLAIRE — The village plans address water-related issues in a business district alleyway when the weather breaks.

At a recent Village Council meeting, Councilman Michael Doyle said during a recent street committee meeting he heard complaints from a few businesses about too much water ponding in an alleyway located off 32nd Street between Belmont and Union streets.

Jack Keefer, village water distribution coordinator, told council that some work was done in the alley to try and remedy the situation.

“We dug down about 4 feet deep and it was a 5-by-5 hole. We didn’t find any evidence of a sinkhole. So we took out the loose stuff and a big rock that wasn’t compacted tight, and we couldn’t find anything,” Keefer said.

“I checked the catch basin beside it and put dye and everything. There was nothing wet and nothing leaking. We packed it full of (stone), and it should be fine,” Keefer noted.

Keefer noted water could be coming off roofs and ponding in the alley.

“I don’t know if that has anything to do with it or not,” he added. “The road might not be sloped right to take the water away. … It looks like it’s been built up over the years.”

Mayor Vince DiFabrizio said there is not much that can be done this winter, but photographs of the puddles can be taken when it rains now to mark where the puddles are. Those pictures could help the village fix the alley during warmer weather, he noted.

In other road matters, Councilman Donny Maupin told council that Upper Clinton Street has been temporarily fixed with 15 tons of asphalt.

“Now the mail truck can get back in there. It looks pretty good, and those couple people are happy,” Maupin said.
