Teasdale tapped as acting mayor

BRIDGEPORT — The village of Bridgeport has a new acting mayor following a special council meeting Monday evening.

Bridgeport Village Council named Councilwoman Norma Teasdale council president pro tempore and acting mayor in Mayor David Smith’s stead after council President Marvin Husarik resigned earlier this month.

After more than six years on council Husarik handed in his resignation, choosing to step down from the responsibility due to “personal reasons.” In February, Husarik had assumed the mayoral duties and day-to-day operations after Smith chose to temporarily relinquish his duties in light of theft allegations levied against him.

Smith faces criminal charges of theft in office, tampering with records and conflict of interest.

He is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the village between June 2016 and November 2019.

Although Smith remains the village mayor, those duties will now be taken over by Teasdale.

Solicitor Michael Shaheen opened the special meeting Monday evening by opening the floor to filling the open positions – a new council member and president pro tempore.

“Ms. Teasdale has indicated a willingness or desire to do that (become pro tempore). … The person that takes that role is only the acting mayor. Up until 45 days prior to the general election this year, anyone can file to fill the mayor’s seat,” he said.

Councilman David Rice made the motion to accept Teasdale into the position. Councilman Jeffrey T. Whitacre seconded the motion. It was unanimously passed.

Teasdale has been a member of council for a total of eight years.

“It’s an honor to fill the role,” Teasdale said following the meeting. “Council and I, we care about the village and are looking forward to serving the residents.”

In addition, council gained another new member — Travis Snodgrass was appointed to council to fill Husarik’s seat.

Snodgrass was the sole person to submit a letter of interest to council. Council unanimously accepted him to fill the remainder of Husarik’s term.

In other news, Teasdale spoke of Saturday’s storm.

“It caused the creek on Second Street to overflow,” she said.

The street department has been attempting to clean up the creek since Saturday night following the flooding.

Crews are working to clean out the debris from drains in numerous areas that sustained flood damage, along with the creek, she said.

“There is more to do. They are working on it,” she said.
