COVID cases climb in Belmont County

Jefferson County reports first fatality

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — As COVID-19 cases in Belmont County increased by at least seven on Wednesday, Jefferson County reported its first coronavirus-related death.

A 73-year-old man who died at his home Monday is Jefferson County’s first known coronavirus-related fatality.

Jefferson County General Health District Commissioner Nicole Balakos said the man, whose identity will not be released, had tested through the emergency department at a local hospital April 10 and was confirmed positive for COVID-19 the following day. The man had no underlying health conditions.

Jefferson County has had 31 residents test positive for the virus.

Belmont County’s confirmed caseload, meanwhile, climbed from 85 to 92, according to Deputy Health Director Robert Sproul. The state reported 93 cases in the county. Seven residents have died as a result of the illness.

Harrison and Monroe counties each have seen two positive test results and zero deaths.

Statewide, 13,609 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 584 have died. With the addition of cases that are presumed positive, Ohio Health Department is reporting 14,117 total infections, with 60 percent of those reported in men and 40 percent in women. The median age of patients is 51.
